DD40 + Steel Royal Oak vs RG Royal Oak

Im very close to going down to the Rolex AD this morning to pick up a yellow gold DD40 with champagne dial. However, I got to thinking last night that I could drive a bit further and add my steel Royal Oak 15400ST to the cash and get a full rose gold Royal Oak 15400OR...

What would you go for? In my opinion when it comes to a full metal watch, yellow gold suits me better than rose gold. However, there is no denying that the 15400OR is one hell of a watch and would be great to own, looking incredible on the wrist... but is it better than a DD40 AND a steel Royal Oak 15400ST??

I have tested most of the AP models and they are really beautiful watches. I just got my DD40 and i am really happy with it. You got the ultimate classic there, yellow gold DD with gold dial. And you are fortunate as it really suits you well!

AP is haute horlogerie piece with double amount of tiny parts compared to DD. I prefer watch to be robust so there is no competition between Rolex, AP and Patek in that point of view - Rolex is totally overpowered, superior, what comes to attribute of being durable and robust.

I would say get the yellow gold DD and keep Royal Oak you have, you get the best of both worlds.

the 15400 is delicate enough in steel... gold renders it a little impractical (IMO... I know others disagree)

I would either get the DD40... or a ceramic ROO 44

Buy the watch you love despite what others feel is the better choice. Regardless if it is considered high horology or collectible. I made the mistake of not following my heart.

I bought a 15202st because of how well regarded it is and the resale value. Not to say I didn't like it. In fact it was an amazing watch and fit me perfectly. I loved it. But it wasn't first choice that really sang to me. The one that I truly wanted was a YGDD. Now I'm on the hunt for one.

Buy the one you love and sings to you most.

A vote for the YG DD 40 + the Steel RO.

I vote for the RG RO which is an epic piece. I had a similar choice with PP and went for a RG Nautilus, my ultimate, rather than the SS and a PM Rolex. Quality over quantity is my rule.

Agree with this if you are adding to a multiple PM collection like Neil.

However if these are your only watches I would go for the SS RO plus DD.

Man, you've got a lot of bang for the buck with the DD40 and steel AP. That duo would cover a LOT of ground in any watch collection, IMO.

However, it's all about what the heart wants, as has been posted above. We don't know you well enough to make that call...however, it kind of sounds like you're second guessing yourself. Go back to basics and think about what it is you really want. Good luck,

You are right guys, to me the 'logical' decision would have been the RG RO - like Neil says, quality over quantity - put all the money into 1 piece. Though I certainly see the logical argument for having the usability of both a DD and a RO.

However forget all logic... what I really wanted is a DD40 - so that's exactly what's in my incoming thread!

The RO is more than robust enough for daily wear, is not expensive to service and will keep its value. In this instance though I can’t see the point of getting it in rg - it’s the same movement as in the ss so all you’re getting is pm. I would stick with what you have which gives you some good choices of what to wear on any given day.

AP's rose gold is very special. I wear PM watches every day. You can pickup a G shock or a used Sub later for the rare occasion you want a steel watch.

Man, I'm normally all for the idea of combining two watches into one great one, but a gold case kinda goes against the entire ethos of the original Royal Oak. I'd probably rather keep the steel Royal Oak and DD.

To be honest, I think you would be insane to do this. You are giving up two icons for what is debatably one IMO. The Day Date and president bracelet is iconic and pure design excellence. You get the same iconic design excellence with the 15400, the original iconic luxury SS sports watch. At the end of the day, YOUR wrist so if that works for you go for it.

I must admit, I do have a 15400 but in blue - I'm not a big fan of the silver dial. I originally would have said you need a steel piece and a gold piece as you can't wear a gold piece everyday. Heck, you definitely couldn't wear the AP to many situations (I wouldn't wear it to the gym, or travelling, visiting my in-laws).

A steel 15400 is an awesome ‘under the radar’ luxury watch, it’s a great one to have in a collection. Though for me it’s got to be the silver dial hehe

Not to be contrary, but yes, you can. I do.

And frankly, if you can afford a $40k gold RO, then $7k or $8k for a sub to wear to the gym or beach isn’t the end of the world.

Undoubtedly the 15400R is a better choice over the two and quality over quantity. Have you tried the 15202 R?

I think the 15202 is the best proportioned RO and the original as designed by GG. I tried one in a boutique and it's awesome
