Why do you need your watch to tell you the date?

Just curious as i can easily remember dates and even if I couldn't I can whip out my handy dandy smart phone.

So... for those who say they must have a watch with the date... why is that?

Because I don't always remember the date (that's what happens when you're retired).

I can't wait to find out. ;-) However, that would be part of the beauty of being retired!

When I'm retired, I doubt I'll care what the date is

This is called hitting the nail on the head. Hell, if I even try to recite the days of the week, I sound like Apollonia in [I]The Godfather.[I] (OTOH, I can remember everything I had for dinner, three Wednesdays ago.)

You can also whip out your phone to tell you the time.

Why do you need a watch to tell you the time if you can just use your phone?

The wrist watch's convenience today is the same as it was 100 years ago. It displays information more conveniently on the wrist. Heck, at this point, I'd even miss the day of the week on my watch, let alone the date!

Fair point and interesting insight. I guess I'm just curious as I've never heard anyone say "I must have a watch to tell time", but they do say they must have it with a date.

Boy, I must have a watch to tell time. It drives me crazy if I don't wear one and have to dig out my phone.

Yeah, yeah wiseacre. You are stating the obvious. I assume some have a real need for the date and was just curious. Get back to preaching about the gloom and doom of mechanical watches (dude from Cali as I recall...).

I’m not sure what you mean??? I was being serious. It drives me nuts not to wear a watch or have the date on it. And I live in Oregon.

I work to several weekly deadlines and find myself using the Day function a lot more than the Date. That may be because I am getting old, but I think 'what day is it?' is probably a more commonly asked question than 'what's the date?'.

Absolutely. My wife also asks what the day and date is quite often, so it keeps me from getting annoyed by being able to check quickly. I wish she’d wear a watch.

My wife asks me about the weather and what traffic. I wish she'd use her smart phone. And the weather, traffic apps I downloaded for her...

I don't need a date. I especially don't like the cyclops. It calls attention to the fact that it's a Rolex. And when the minute/hour hand are under the cyclops, I find the time less legible

In terms of signing documents, if I'm not 100% sure about the date, I am going to reference my phone or computer. I'm not going to trust a mechanical watch that I may have set incorrectly.

Thanks for sharing and that's a beautiful watch! Love that dial.

I don't need a date on my watch plus I like the looks better without. If I had to have a date watch it would be a SD4K because I can't get over the cyclops.

I am a luddite when it comes to phones, I can remember the day & month easily enough yet the date that day eludes me. Find with my non-date watches, I look at them for the date.

I like having the date (not the day) on my watches but do own a few without. And you're right I could look at the date on my phone but I could also look at the time as well. It's just that I don't.

When I look at my phone, I don't see the date or the time because I just don't look for it. I could. I just don't.

For me the only complication I really like on a watch is the date although I have a couple of chronographs but I never use the function. I just like the look of the watches.

So none of this is what I need. Just what I want.

I like it for a few reasons. Convenience, as well as aesthetics.

Hadn't thought of the aesthetics angle. Makes sense.

I don’t. I don’t need a Rolex.

But I have them.

It’s not about what you need, it’s about what you want.

Funny, when my daily wearer had a date I used the date function all the time to tell the date. Now that I have an ND as a daily wearer, I don’t miss it at all.

For those who want to use their phones to tell the time, too, there's always this option:
