Hello everyone,

Thanks so much for taking the time to read my post. My husband loves watches, but never treats himself to actually own a watch like Rolex, so I have decided that for his 40th birthday, I am going to buy him one. I still have a little over 12 months to learn about these watches and what I should do.

Ultimately, I have a budget of no more than AUD $10,000 (Currently USD7800) and would even like to stay under that if possible.

I've been looking pre-loved, and to my excitement, a Rolex isn't out of the question, but I need advice on what I should do. Should I go a brand new entry level Rolex, or try for something a little more, but pre-loved? For his first Rolex, I'd prefer something in excellent condition and would appreciate any advice you can give me.

Welcome! If it were myself, and considering your budget, I'd probably look for preowned vs new. Many great pieces to be had. Good luck!

Which city are you closest to?

a10k should stretch to a new unit of SS Datejust or a AirKing, Milgauss is doable and maybe even an Explorer if you're lucky. There's reasonable stock around.

Sport SS models virtually unobtainable stock brandnew; Used latemodel pieces are reselling at (or above!) RRP lately which is crazy IMHO... I ain't paying that to play.

but Tudor is worth a look - they've a nice range for ~$5k ea, they're a bit chunkier than bigbrother Rolex.

After you buy, gift it then bring guy & gift back to the store for fitting.

I do have it in my head I want it to be a Rolex. I've wanted to buy him one for over 10 years now so I am committed to the idea :)

I am in Australia, Brisbane to be exact, and would like to find a reputable dealer because I do not have the knowledge to buy from a private seller - it could end in disaster (trust me, I've been there once before with a Mont Blanc pen - heartbroken).

Brissy should have a few ADs around the city, should go pop in have a look. Familiarize yourself what's available on the market & their price points... doesn't need to be an impulse immediate purchase

You should join a private Facebook forum called Australian Watch Buy, Swap and Sell. There is a Sea Dweller on there for $8,500 from Sydney, Rolex GMT Master 16700 for $9,500 from Sydney, another Rolex that is waiting for payment, and another one that's on hold for someone.

I understand it's hard to trust private sellers after that experience, there are private sellers that need to make sure buyers are 100% satisfied, otherwise they're out of business. It's why they have references for anyone that wants to know more about the seller.

If you want my help with anything don't be afraid to ask, I am more than happy to take time out of my day to help anyone out!
