What type of Safe are you using ? Share a pic!

Fortunate enough to own things that people would be interested in stealing I'm thinking about purchasing a safe for our soon-to-be house.

I'd be happy to see what types of safes people around the forum have. No need to share the address or the content of the safe :)

Bonus question: Did you put it in a wall or just on the ground of a hidden/less exposed area in the house ?

IMHO the safest place is a safe deposit box at the bank. A home safe is good but I would only put stuff like passports and emergency cash in it. This is only my opinion as others on this board probably have some extraordinary home safes.

IF you read the whole post you'd see I'm researching a safe to keep my own stuff in. I'm also building a house and am thinking of putting it in a wall instead of just on the floor.
My intentions are honest (I don't know if noble), I am definitely not seeking to rob you of your goods. Thats also why I wrote that you should not post your address or content.

Also, asking me what I do for a living. How does this contribute to the post ?

You are always better off hiding your safe. Put it into a closet, bolt it to the floor, and don’t tell anyone you have one. You don’t want casual visitors to know you have valuables or a safe, so do your best to conceal both.

Have 3 safes. A large gun safe. And two smaller gun safes that are scattered around the house. We live in a low crime area so I don’t worry about it too much. Mainly because of what else in in the safes.

We have an attack Poodle from the hood and an alarm system. Best thing is nosey neighbors though.

1000 lb safe bolted to the foundation down stairs and 500lb safe bolted to the floor upstairs, 2 large dogs as well as video surveillance indoors and out. The safes don’t hold any of my watches other than the one or two I’m wearing that week. Watches and jewelry are kept in bank safe deposit boxes. The Home safes are for passports, important business docs and the things I can’t mention on this forum.

Go to your local locksmith for recommendations. There are a lot of options, and what you buy depends a lot on your specific requirements.

The one thing I would recommend is a manual (dial) S&G lock. They never have any problems and will last five lifetimes, for less than a night out at a nice restaurant with the missus.

This reason I feel so emotional and strongly about this topic is because my home was burglarized in broad daylight by a gang of Indonesian robbers when I was 12. Nobody was hurt but they held my parents, aunty, cousin and the maid at knife point ( I wasnt at home at that time). My mum, with a hunting knife held in front of her neck calmly told the thieves not to hurt anyone but to please take her gold chain, her Cartier watch and some cash. Mum pointed out to them, there was nothing else really worth stealing so they should leave before the police patrol unit make their rounds ( My neighbourhood had a couple of break-ins that month).I guess dad's Citizen watch wasn't worth stealing either. Mum even had the nerve to seek their permission to go to the kitchen (which the gang leader agreed ) packed some prepared sandwiches, tin can food and instant noodles for them ! They left the house without another word...

My point is if a burglar(s) is trying to rob you at gunpoint (or knifepoint) in your own home with your valuables stored away in secret hidden places,what are you going to do?

Home burglary vs home robbery (at gun/knifepoint along with various other bodily threats) are two different scenarios.

Residential burglaries usually occur when no one is home. Robbery is a face-to-face confrontation (and poses a far more dangerous threat to life and limb).

Safe/security system/guard dogs + other forum-restricted 'unmentionables' is about all one can do. A comprehensive insurance/recovery policy also comes in handy as the bottom line is no watch (or any other material item) is worth getting killed or injured over.

I have a nug safe that is bolted to the floor. It is around 20 years old and it is on the small side as nug safes go. I really need a bigger one as I have more nugs now with no room for more.

My old one was similar, except 5 feet tall and 900 pounds.

The new one is the same size, but has a fireproof door design, thicker walls made of mil spec armor plate (makes it about 400 pounds heavier), and a dial lock.

Wow. What a coincidence. I just ordered a 35” wide executive series vault door from vault pros. Super helpful people there. I am going the other route and building something similar to a bank vault I can walk in.

Bunch of interesting responses.

As per my previous thumbs up, I’m not too big on divulging too much info.

That said, I do have a safe. And it’s anchored into the floor. Must weigh well over 300 lbs. easy. It’s alao in an incredible difficult place to access behind an extremely heavy door that is locked at all times.

However, if anyone goes through all the trouble to get it, and they can actually open it. All they will get is a couple of bucks and some documents.

I don’t keep anything in the house that I’d be too upset losing. Sure, I’ve got a watch or two, but they are definitely not worth the effort to a professional. And very unlikely a non pro is even getting into my house. It’s locked tight. Always.

Besides, living in a townhouse has its advantages. I’ve got neighbors out and about nearly all the time. And we watch out for each other. My one neighbor was away and I saw lights in their home. So I snuck up and watched. One light went out. I crept around the corner to get a better look. His cleaning lady scared the living daylights out of me.

That plus my two vicious noise makers and an alarm system are my piece of mind.
