Rolex 16610 Sapphire Cracked on Watch 23rd Birthday 😞

This morning I wore my 23 yr old 16610 (S serial, purchased new on january 1995) on for work and after a couple of hours noticed it had stopped. It was last serviced about 10 years ago, so said to myself time to take it for service! I took it off and accidentally dropped it on the edge of my vault and cracked the sapphire. Cyclop is no where to be found!

Immediately pulled the crown and am already coordinating to send it to Rik Dietel for servicing, know it will come back looking like new again!

This morning WRUW picture:

Ouch that hurts, Francisco! Sounds like it was due in for service anyway. I’m sure it’ll come back good as new.

Thanks! It seems the hit was taken completely by the sapphire (which was planning to replace anyway as had a small chip on the edge) so should be fine.

So as time goes by, the sapphire will get weaker and cyclops looser? Or is this a result of the chip in the sapphire already being there and an unfortunate hard knock vs vault? Do they check the cyclops at a service? Probably no answers to these..

No and no. Just one unlucky watch.

It would be my guess that the cyclops flew off due to the impact that cracked the crystal. They're just glued on, you know.

Sorry to see that, Francisco. At least it was service time anyways!

I love the irony that your vault, which exists to protect your watch, was the thing that was its ultimate demise. That figures!

Ouch ! We 're people and these things just happen. Don't blame yourself. It was time for the service anyways.
I can't mention that you took the best decision after the drop (pulling the crown).

What does pulling the crown after a drop and cracked crystal do?

Prevents crystal fragments to get into the moving gear and cause damage

What was the purpose of doing this? Something to do with shards of sapphire getting into the movement? Thanks! Sorry to see this.

Yes. You don't want the movement grinding up little pieces of sapphire for 40+ hours. Sapphire is harder than steel, but very brittle.

Sorry about your watch, Francisco.
