Budget car choice of TRF??
I'm probably in the very bottom of the income bracket here at TRF. But, I still share some of the joys that many of you do. That said, what would you guys recommend on the used market for a fun, sporty, performance, etc car?
Lets say under $10,000 USD? I always like the idea of finding those hidden gems that may be a little tired, but are worth the trouble. I've owned a '98 Z28 myself years ago, but a lot of those 4th Gen F-bodies have seen better days. |

C3 or C4 corvette. Plenty of them around. Usually found in most gas stations with a for sale sign.

You can't go wrong with a GTI. They are very special cars.

X3 the GTI is one of the most fun cars I have ever owned. Solid build, great handling, the practicality of a hatchback and great gas mileage to boot. I much prefer driving it to my wife's Lexus SC430:)

I would be looking at a s2000 or an E36 or E46 M3. I had an E46 M3 as a daily driver for over 155K miles and it was one of the best cars I've ever owned (and was rock solid reliable to boot).

IF reliability is primary : Under 10k FORGET any European car unless your three best friends are a rollback driver, euro mechanic, and a loan officer ! The maintenance costs will not justify the purchase. Use any maintenance/reliability rating site to confirm my statement. Google “Best Sports Car Under 10k”, then google reliability rating for each, they will mostly be Japanese. Mazda Miata Mustang GT Nissan 350Z Corvette C4 (possibly) Infiniti G37 (possibly)

You'll pay extra not only for the OEM parts but for the mechanic with the European accent performing the labor. |

A 928 under 10k is a big POS, I'd not buy that.

The only decent Porsche you can have over here for under €10k is a 924. The 944 is a little more expensive and the 928 starts between 15-20k for OK examples.
Cheaper in the US? |

Under 10k ....
Car pices here in Canada would say: Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, something of that sort. A good reliable car that you can pound mileage into without expensive repair costs. I’d steer clear of high mileage Porsche etc |

I had a ford fiesta from enterprise once and had a blast driving it. I assume GTIs are awesome but would not buy one used.

Two seat drop top fun would be a Mazda Miata, Porsche Boxster, Vette baby!
Hardtop joy would be Vette, late model Z28 w/gear box, Mustangs. A lot of Mustang choices for the buck. Have fun and good luck. |
