Icon2 Grand Seiko Quartz Crystals

Here's an interesting promo video about the making of a GS quartz watch. Check out those crystals at about the 35-second mark!

Great stuff Adam. GS is an amazing house and the attention to detail is truly outstanding. Also a great design team with Nobuhiro Kosugi being one of them and responsible - among other fantastic and fancier designs - for last year's redesign of the SLA017.

That was great Adam! Thanks for posting.
GS really seems like a good value compared to many fine Swiss manufacturers that are continually pushing their prices ever higher and offering much less than our friends in Japan.

Amazing, Adam - thank you for posting.

I've just received a 9F GS SBGX263 this week, so as you can imagine, I researched a great deal, and watched a very many YouTube videos before purchasing, but not one of them encapsulated all the various special elements as comprehensively as that video does.

It's pretty astonishing the level of hand-finishing, hand-assembling & hand-setting that GS receive - it reminds me a little of A Lange & Sohne, in so much as ALS don't skimp on finishing standards whether you buy their cheapest or most expensive models - all get the same plate striping, hand-engraved balance cock etc. In a similar fashion, a Quartz GS gets the same level of polishing etc. as a Spring Drive Snow Flake.

Even the way their 9F Quartz movement was developed with user experience & aesthetics in mind speaks to a brand which truly values the customer experience.

And although it needs a battery change every 3 to 5 years, Seiko suggests it may not need a service for 50 years, and will barely lose or gain 30 secs between battery changes, so it's pretty self-sufficient and cheap to maintain in the long term, too.

Congrats on the new piece, by the way. Let's see a pic

A nice video and wish they had a 2 hour version with a little more detail.

Thank you very much

Sorry, only now getting around to posting up a few iPhone pics taken at the weekend - forgive the indulgence of multiple pics, but I've been asked about the colour-shifting nature of the 263's champagne dial, so I thought it might be instructive to show the watch across several hours of the same day...

^^^Beautifully captured, and quite stunning.

You have probably seen this before, but it's a breakdown of the various steps GS undertake when making the complex champagne dial - I think the silver & gold plating steps really help illustrate why there is so much colour shift & depth to the dial:

sbgx271

this one caught my eye, a JDM. Is it a silver dial vs the champagne on the 263? I started to consider the 263 after finally seeing some pictures that do it some justice. So now I am a lil undecided, though I am sure either is nice. The 271 has some color along the edges of the dial and the blue seconds hand to give it some pizazz... but the champagne sure is tugging at my heart...

How timely to spot this post. Something just went off in me about a GS Quartz. I had a nice SBGA001 spring drive for a short while a few years ago and it didn't last. I found it a little too big and bulky. The height of the quartz models is appealing to me, especially on a 37mm case like the 263 or 271. The price... still expensive but a lot less than the spring drive automatics. I daresay the quartz is a watch to be proud of and the technology behind it is just amazing...

I own this GS Quartz and the dial is like curtain and indices and numerals appear floating in air. Pictures don't do justice to this beautiful dial!

Brilliant vid, thank you. I was just saying in another thread that, although many dont appreciate quartz, mine is getting an awful lot of wrist time. I absolutely love this watch. I set the time of all my others from this.
