No. It may (currently) retain a high % of your purchase price, but that could change. Buying something you love as an investment is, to me, not being honest with yourself.

The above may not be a popular sentiment around here.

I buy Rolex watches because I love the enjoyment I get out of wearing them. If they gain value great, if not, doesn't bother me one bit.

Nope, not an investment if you mean you would like to make money out of it. I wouldn't go down that road. Some people get lucky but I think it's difficult to plan for it to happen.

If you are looking to buy a lovely watch that retains it's value better than most others and that you won't take a bath on, well then it's a good investment/purchase over other brands from that point of view. You can buy other brands and after walking out of the store your "investment" is worth an awful lot less.

Only as so far as if you're in a pinch for some fast cash, you'd get a slice from a pawn shop or something like that.

Maybe we can sticky one of the threads and then lock down any new thread that gets posted asking the same question?

When half of the threads on Page 1 are variations of "are Rolex watches investments" or "I heard model ____ is going to be discontinued" it really takes down the quality of this forum.

To me the question is : will rolex retain its value?

It’s for sure not an investment but if In addition to wearing it, enjoying it and collecting it, retaining its value or gaining some value wouldn’t hurt!
That’s how I justify to myself buying them as “if” I need to sell any (hopefully never) I would at least get what I paid for it out!

I was just curious as to what people thought is all. I have yet to buy any Rolex or watch for that matter. I am currently on the hunt for a DD I think.

People use the word ‘investment’ differently depending on context

If you mean financial investment, like stocks or bonds, then no, of course not, unless of maybe you are a professional watch collector that understands the market.

The colloquial way to use investment is more applicable: will I get a lot of enjoyment over a long period of time that makes this seemingly expensive product worth it? So, someone may ask, if they are starting out on guitar ‘is a Les Paul Standard a good investment’? If you end up playing the guitar for decades and love the Les Paul tone, then yeah, it’s a pretty good ‘investment’. If playing guitar is your hobby of the week and it sits in the corner unplayed, then you’re probably wasting your money.

With a Rolex the answer can often be yes. That is, because of the conservative nature of Rolex (styles have been the same for decades), you could wear a Rolex for the rest of your life (unless your a watch flipping WIS) and then pass on to your ungrateful kids. And if you ever get tired of it you can likely get a lot of your money back. So the outlay is your initial purchase, and the return is getting to wear a watch you love for years. So using the colloquial definition, a Rolex (or other watch that is unlikely to suddenly go out of style) can be a good investment.

Yes. It is an investment. A good one? Well thats more complicated. It is a great way to enjoy some beautiful machines for a low total cost, relative to other past times, due to a high percentage of retained value...

In my experience no. I have just sold a T/T Daytona 116503 [New Model] which I purchased new in March 2017 to fund another T/T Daytona with White MOP eight Diamonds Dial. On the Watch I sold I lost 1,460 GBP which is an awful lot for a Watch that wasn't even a year old. That was the best price I could get having tried five buyers. Some had the cheek to offer me as low as 8,500 GBP which was well off the mark. I think I done well to get 9,750 GBP but I thought I would have got at least 10,000 GBP or a little more. I suppose it wasn't bad for a T/T Daytona, I don't think they hold their value as do the S/S Models but I think the T/T Daytona's are elegant that's why I have ordered my next one with the White MOP eight Diamonds Dial & I also think that they are more practical as a daily Watch. The only drawback is they don't hold their value unfortunately. So as an investment maybe a S/S Model would be a better bet

That’s not why I love the brand but in the last two years I’ve bought pre owned 5 digit and 6 digit subs and both are worth more now in the market, each about 1k higher than what paid for similar age and condition. No intention of selling them because will pass them to kids one day but nice to know they hold value.

Investment

Many people would agree with me (I hope) that investing in depreciating assets is not a great strategy.
Like a watch? Buy it. Wear it.
Invest in Rolexes? Me, I'd rather invest in tulips.

Great forum. Recently found you. First post. Be kind.

Depends. If you have a Daytona Big Red or Paul Newman you have a huge return on your investment. But a run of the mill Rolex not so much. You just have to choose wisely and also keep it for a long time to see that return..
