I know there has been 1,000 threads regarding the new vs old Explorer II size but I was hoping you guys could help me out. I’m relatively new to watch collecting. My only other watch is a two line 14060M. I do have a Luminox Jolly Roger but that’s more of a novelty. I was looking to add an Explorer II Polar to the collection but feel the 40 is just a hair too small and the 42 is a hair too big. I’ve included a couple of wrist shots of each and hoping to get some advice as to which looks better. The maxi dial on the 42 isn’t ideal but with the smaller no date sub I thought it might be a nice contrast. Thanks for all your advice!

Do you know your wrist size and shape? Flatter shape means you can get away with larger watches even with a smaller wrist size. And so on.

Also, images are small and hard to see. (Unless there's a way to expand attached images that I'm not aware of.)

Thanks for the response. I just realized the pictures are a bit blurry. I kept downsizing them from my iPhone until they were able to upload. I'm new at this so I'm sure there is a better way of uploading iPhone images. My wrist is around 7.5 inches, maybe a tad bigger. I would say my wrist is pretty flat although with my 40mm Sub there is a slight separation at the end of each lug so it doesn't sit completely flat.

I brought the 42mm on Monday but I went for the black as it will be my only Rolex and love it. Funny enough the only other Rolex I’ve owned was a 2011 no date Sub if it was me I’d go for the 42mm over the 40mm the bracelet is a big improvement, it looks good on you mate and if buying new you get 5 years warranty win win.

Thanks....I love the black as well! I just thought the white would be a good alternative with the black sub and then eventually a Speedy down the line. I'm having a little trouble with the fatter hands (especially the minute hand) but I'm sure that I would get used to it over time. I take a lot of dive trips and this seems like it would be very legible underwater.

the 42 feels too big on my wrist .. love the 40! end of the day it’s all personal preference and i’m sure you’d get used to the bigger dial pretty quickly!

I bought the 40mm. Love it and happy with my purchase. Although a 5 digit can't be considered vintage, my other two Rolex watches are 6 digit references, so I feel like I bought a vintage model with my 16570.

I really appreciate everyone's opinions. I know you can't go wrong either way which almost makes the decision harder..lol Since I already have the 40mm Sub, I think I'm going to try the 42mm Exp II in Polar. Although I'm not completely in love with the fatter hands just yet, I'm sure that I'll appreciate the better legibility scuba diving or in lower light situations.

Images are very fuzzy.

But does appear to me like the 40mm side fits you better for my taste. Hard to tell from the fuzzy images.
