I was changing the date on my 5 digit ExII to catch it up with the short month, Plus I haven’t worn it for about a week. To change the date, you advance the hour hand around twice independently. It will click from hour to hour. Then, I noticed it was no longer clicking, but merely spinning around the dial. It’s still changes the date, but it is no longer running with the time.

I wonder how expensive this will be?

Probably a broken GMT wheel spring, this part is updated during service (if you have the 3186).
I'd recommend full service, but you might be able to find a watchmaker with parts acc who can just take the dial off, fix this problem and you're good to go.

Thanks, gents... Yeah, it's the 3186, which was serviced in 2014. Does this movement have a history of doing this?

Yes.

Was it serviced at a Rolex service center? Because the spring should have been replaced in 2014. I find it odd that if you do have the updated spring it is now broken.

I purchased it from a trusted seller here. Not sure if the spring was replaced. I have no reason to assume one way or the other, to be fair.

I have a good watchmaker in my hometown who offered to take a look.

Just curious how you know this. I've tried to do as much research on this issues as possible, but have found nothing confirming that this part has been updated/improved. I absolutely believe you, but it would be great to know more details, like how was it improved. Did they simply make it thicker? Thanks!

The shape is different, it is a bit larger so it won't break as easily.
I know this because I'm a watchmaker intern at a Rolex service center.

Yes - All of the early 3186 / 3187 movements could have your exact problem. That includes the 16750 and the 16710 and the 11671X as well. People here don't like to talk about it but it's a problem with the movement. It seems to be jump hour click spring.

I don't believe that it's been fixed, as we've also seen it happen in 3187 movements. I wouldn't be surprised if it eventually repeats in 3186 watches, over time.

The updated spring is not invincible, it can still break. But this happens a LOT less than with the original spring it came out with.
The 3187 had the larger, updated spring from the beginning on.

Are we totally sure about that? I now it's tough with anecdotal evidence around there, but it seems like we've seen a number of 3187 breaks, too.

just to clarify, my 1987 3186 is currently @ RSC getting its first service. i should fully expect that:

1. this spring should be replaced, and
2. this will remedy the issue that the early model 3186s were experiencing

is that right?

I think it's a common problem with that watch. I have the 5 digit exp II and the same thing happened to me. It was out of warranty by less than a year. Sent it to Dallas RSC and they fixed it for free:-)

Also, forgot to mention mine is an early 3186 movement
