Who thinks growing old is a blessing

I finally went to the Dr today for an issue I’ve had for awhile. I kept telling myself and my wife that given time it would just go away. Well after a month it hadn’t gone away. So yesterday when the wife told me she was going to make an appointment I didn’t tell her no.

So the Nurse practitioner tells me she believes it’s arthritis. X-rays to be done to make sure but she was pretty convinced it is arthritis so instead of a magic pill to make it go away or potentially a temporary issue it looks like as my back goes (arthritis) so goes my knee. Oh and my hands.

So I mention growing old sucks. She says growing old is a blessing. So I say sorry, but growing old sucks.

Better than the alternative but growing old sucks,

I’m 66 & have a bit of arthritis. Doctor mentioned it is sometimes hereditary, my moms side has that issue......I do stretching excersise daily & thank the gods for extra strength Tylenol & legal California Cannabis!

I hardly ever take aspirin, but sure wished I lived in Colorado or California.

I'm 74 and I've got some arthritis in the neck. I take one Aleve per day along with a Centrum Silver, a Prilosec (for GERD) and a low dose statin to keep my cholesterol in check. Other than that, I'm pretty healthy.

I remember my Grandmother and Grandfather long ago loading up their days of the week pill containers. Somehow I see myself having to give in and doing the same at some point in the future.

I'm not old by any means nor do I know how it "feels" to grow old but I think to live a happy long life is a blessing. If I can function and enjoy peoples company sign me up for that.

I think your missing my point. Has nothing to do with living a long life, enjoying the things you can do, or enjoying your family.

It’s all about the toll that living this long can have on and what happens to your body as you get older. The parts that no longer work and the parts that start to hurt.

I’m thankful for seeing my sons growing up.
Sometimes I think getting older is like maintaining a car with many miles. There are always parts that need replacing and it still doesn’t drive like it did many miles ago. Maybe one day we can trade our bodies for a new one. At times I need reminders to accept and play out the cards we were dealt.

I get the point, I can only imagine as the body starts to break down. Routine service helps but in the end as you stated, some things just don't work anymore. I stand by my original thoughts but will attempt to articulate myself a bit better.

As we grow older the various healthy issues we will have are somewhat a given. Given the obvious you have to be blessed to get to a point where you can unfortunately start to deteriorate. A catch 22 of sorts but as I stated earlier a blessing nonetheless.

It sucks getting old and not being able to do certain things. Life is short and everyday we wake up is a blessing.

Good luck with the arthritis rehab/pain relief.

I had a spot removed on my neck last year. Turned out to be basal cell carcinoma (form of skin cancer). As skin cancers go though this is the one to have apparently as once it is removed you are in the clear and my margins were clear once the doctor removed it.

I'm definitely slowing down a bit though... not happy at all about that quite frankly.

Glad to hear it was probably the least destructive forms of cancer. I thank god I’ve yet to have anything of that nature yet. My back has been the worse so far but since I believe the shot they gave me has worn off by now I am hoping back surgery may not be required at least for now maybe anyway.

I think you are looking at this all wrong. New diagnoses are simply new opportunities. Wean yourself from the activities that aggravate and adopt activities that maintain your vigor.

For example, I used to run 12 miles a day and do a lot of backpacking and rough terrain hiking. When my knees got too bad for that, I took up rodeo bull riding and deep technical diving. Life doesn’t end with a diagnosis, it just changes.

You gave up hiking for bull riding because hiking was too hard on you?

It is a blessing and a curse. I am 68. I just had flu and then pneumonia and was hospitalized for several days. I tried to get back to exercising and strained my muscles. A couple of weeks of not exercising and my muscles were shot. Sucks being old.

Oh, I had both flu AND pneumonia vaccines; neither worked.

And younger girls just look through me as if I don't exist. I'm happily married, but still. 30 year olds think I'm a geezer. Physically I am. Mentally I feel younger.

I used too and still do pride myself on my endurance and physical strength. The first to finish the 30 mile road march or run the 2 mile run the fastest. Problem is I no longer would be the first to do either of these. I do tell younger people I can still beat them. I just tell them I’ll cheat and trip them if I have too. I just say I’ve gotten wiser and do what ever it takes to get it done.

Glad to hear it sounds that your better now.

Oh yeah, probably a good thing I married 35 years ago. Might not be such a great catch now.

Did the VA take good care of you?

Yes. I am 70% disabled. The VA was very slow, and lost my paperwork a couple of times, but they finally had one of their doctors examine me. Once you get in the VA system, it is pretty good, at least in Southern California.

Another thing is all geezers I know blame everything bad on millennials. I think every generation blames young whippersnappers for all their ills. Some Roman 2000 years ago made a famous comment that was similar.
