I recall during the run up to Basel last year we had zero rumors about a new Sub. In fact, I specifically remember people saying we were probably at least 5 years or so away from a new Sub (based on some anniversary year). But this year, there quite a few new SUb rumors. i.e. new movement, slimmer lugs etc.

I wonder why?

They are changing all the lines around it. Datejust, Seadweller, Day-Date all got slimmer lugs and new movements.

Could explain the lack of supply of the current sub as well.... maybe they are preparing for the new release. This is honestly just wishful thinking on my part because I really love the old red letter sub

Ironed out the 'questionable' design elements going back to the earlier proportions, I think he meant. I'd have to agree with the direction Rolex appears to be going as well. I've never been particularly keen on the recent phase where Rolex went nuts redesigning all their iconic models. Sooner the better in my opinion.

Well, I do like my GMTIIC, but to be honest I don’t need another Ceramic Sub-alike.

I would like an older Day Date - in WG w/ sticks... or even a classic steel DJ 16234.

Subs are their best selling items, they need to test the new movement to other product first before put it in the subs.. since dj41, sd43 have use this new movement, and also almost all competitor product have go up to above 48 hour power reserved, so they have no chance to put their subs back to the long power reserved trends.

I have no idea what Rolex has ready for Basel 2018 nor am I predicting anything.

Fair question. So far, the 32xx has only appeared in newly designed models. Rolex has yet to put it in existing models. Based on that limited data (we only have four models to go by at this point), we could infer Rolex is intent on building a portolio of new models with new movements, and not blurring the lines. It's pretty early to tell, though.

Before last year, there was no 32xx in a sports model. Now we have the SD43. That combined with the SS sports shortage, and the fact it's an anniversary year, has a lot of people thinking a new Sub is forthcoming.

Rolex always upgrades the PM models first, then the two tone, then the SS, the exception to this is the Daytona. Movements get upgraded, and sometimes the new movement for the new model gets put in the old case, this happened with the last 5 digit gmts.

For consistancy I would expect the two tone daytonas to get ceramic bezels this year. Other than that, its all pretty much guess work. But we will soon know.

The Sub date has been around for 8 years, the Sub for 6 years, and that seems like the shorter end for past models. But I wouldn't be surprised if Rolex added the new movement but kept the Sub about the same cosmetically.

The SS Sub Date has been around for 8 years. The WG Sub Date debuted in 2008, so as a design, the super-case Sub Date has been going for ten years. Either way, replacement does seem premature by Rolex standards.

So many here seem unhappy and disgruntled about the current Sub. There ARE alternatives, such as the Sea Dweller, DSSD, etc. I have no gripes with the current configuration and with the current demand worldwide many non watch forum Rolex buyers don't seem to either. So what happens come Basel if there is no "new Sub"? LOL

And I thought even if you have a case redesign in the sub .....doesn’t it start at the top with precious metal and eventually, years later, get down to the ss model

...so the hoopla should be more contained maybe??

Yes. The people foaming at the mouth for a new SS Sub/Date this year probably have rabies and are neurologically impaired.

I really really hope it doesn’t change. I finally got to try one on after several months of going into the same dealer and was completely sold. Ok it was the all yellow gold version but it wasn’t difficult to imagine in steel.
