Good call or dumb decision?
This past summer, I took a trip to Switzerland, and with a lot of effort, I arranged to buy a 114060 Submariner (no date) while I was on my trip (I decided that I preferred the no date version over the date version, but didn't give much thought to the Hulk because it wasn't as classic).
By way of background, I have several watches including a Patek Nautilus in steel (5712A), and wanted a Sub to wear primarily on the weekend and as a pool/ocean watch or just wanted to change up my look. I also have a Panarai 359 as a casual watch (with a date), so the sub was meant to be more of a "beater" watch for me when I didn't want to wear the 5712 or PAM 359 (I also have a JLC dress watch as well as a Bell & Ross time only BR-01 on a rubber strap). I also wanted to add a Rolex to my collection, so this trip to Switzerland seemed like a great opportunity to pick one up in the motherland... My plan for this particular Rolex was/is to keep it forever given the extra sentimentality of getting it in Switzerland. When I finally arrived to the AD in Switzerland, they got the watch out of the safe and then their jaw dropped when they opened the box and realized that they had been holding a 116610LV instead (by mistake). I held the Hulk in my hand, but did not try it on. As I was doing this, the store manager made some calls and told me that my 114060 could be transferred to their store the following day, or I could buy the Hulk right then if I preferred? I chose to wait and buy the 114060 the next day. I've been thrilled with it ever since. That being said, my favorite part of my 5712 is that the dial is ever-changing depending on the light. The starburst effect on the Hulk makes me wonder if I would likewise prefer that watch to the plain black dial of the 114060? Recently, with the rising prices and limited availability of the Hulk, I am starting to regret not at least trying on the Hulk to see if it "sung" to me. On the flip-side, what attracted me to the 114060 in the first place was that I don't like the cyclops (although I don't hate it either), didn't want to have to set the date every weekend when I put the watch back on after 5 days off, and I like the low-key nature of the 114060 (as well as the fact that it is the original and pure-- in line with my keep it for life outlook on this watch). The reason I didn't give the Hulk a closer look is because I thought green might be too loud, and also something I could tire of rather than keep forever. But now I'm starting to wonder if I made the right choice and I haven't been able to find a Hulk at an AD since feeling this way to try it on and see once and for all (and at this rate, I may never be able to do so). So... loyal TRF people: Did I make the right choice by choosing my first choice in the timeless 114060, or should I have gone for the more unique, although more flashy (and $1,500 more expensive) 116610lv? |

TLDR
You bought your first choice, there is nothing to question.

Not trying to make you feel bad, but why in the world did you not even try it on? It’s one of the most sought after ss models, and for good reason. The nd subs are everywhere, the hulk is much less in the wild. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

At this moment in the game, I would have gone Hulk at MSRP. Money in the bank!

Also, the goal was to not put myself in a position to ever want to sell, so even if the watch continues to go up in value, it is somewhat irrelevant if I never sell it. |

I own both but I wouldn’t pass up an LV. It is such a special watch and the dial is unreal!

I love my LVc, but based on your narrative I think you made the right decision to get the Sub ND. You seem to have more solid reasons for choosing the ND over the LVc. The LVc probably seems more interesting since it is in limited supply these days. As I said, I love my LVc and think it's a splendid addition to a collection, but may not be for everyone. You made the right decision. Enjoy and wear your ND in good health. Cheers!

You made the right decision - you bought what you loved and not what you ‘thought’ was the smart buy. It’s hard to predict demand - if the LV was readily available now and with no premium, would you consider it? If the answer is no then that should reinforce what we all know - that you made the right call! Enjoy!

You gotta love green to consider the Hulk. I wouldn't have tried it either, and I think you made a great choice by picking the 114060.

Even though it seems like fate put the LVc in your path, and you declined it, I do feel like you went with the watch you wanted.
Which is good |

If there were currently LVc’s in every AD showcase would you still feel the same way?

Green is one of my least favorite colors. Don't let others' opinions influence what you like.

I’m not a huge fan of the hulk. The 16610LV is a different story. IMHO, if you’re only going to have one Rolex, the SubC ND is the perfect choice. I had this one for a year or so. I only flipped it because I had too many subs. It very comfortable to wear. If I ever get another sub, it will be that one.

I bought a Hulk and sold it eight weeks later. I bought a 114060 to replace it, and am happier for it. Black is always the right choice for a forever SS watch.

As long as you’re happy, then you made the right choice! Don’t buy an LVc for the hype, buy it cause you like it.

The Hulk didn’t sing to you... now, with limited availability and increasing value, you begin to doubt yourself....
You made the right call! You bought the watch that you wanted! Love it and cherish it deeply! |
