1675 — Small chip in Hour Lume Plot

Hey everybody,

I realize this may be a bit OCD, so apologies in advance if it is.

I recently noticed a very very minor bit of lume chipped off or just missing from the 9 o’clock lume plot. My guess is that this happened when the second and minute hand fell off. To be honest, it bothers me every time I look at the watch. Am I making too big of a deal out of this? Do you guys think it’d be best to leave it alone or attempt to get it fixed?

I know it seems absolutely nutty to be so fixed on the dial when the bezel insert is scratched lol. It’s totally irrational. Appreciate the advice. Thx for weighing in.

Personally I hate when I get that feeling. Then there is no coming back for me when this happens. Can’t say this would bother me but I totally understand you.

I'd say leave it be. I find it kind of interesting that you actually KNOW the story of that part of your watch...let it just be part of its character.

If the rest of the watch was showroom condition, and it was a rare gilt dial, I'm sure the responses would be different of course...

i would definitely leave it, part of the watch patina now if it was a piece of lint or dust spec on the dial which i have had Enjoy that beauty of a gmt you have!

Thanks for weighing in everybody. I just need to accept that this is part of the watch now and what makes it unique.

Dial makes up the majority of value on these peices, it’s a small nick hopefully won’t progress.

Looks like the consensus is to leave it alone. I think that’s exactly what I will do.

However, for the sake of curiosity, is this something that could delicately be filled in if it were in skilled hands? I’d imagine it could, but just wondering what you guys think.

OCD and vintage watches are a horrible combination. I own, and have owned, many vintage Rolexes and literally every one of them had some kind of imperfection. Heck, even some of my modern Rolexes, including some I bought new, have had imperfections.

That's a great vintage GMT. Enjoy it and throw away your loupe.

Until it comes time to sell...Then the same people saying “leave it,it’s part of the History” will kick You on the price over it.

Leave it - the only way you can fix it is to find a dial better than yours - extremely rare - that happens to match your hands perfectly - even more rare.

And then you still run a risk of the watchmaker making a mistake.

That is a great piece and likely has less bumps and bruises than you do. If it has more - you need to go out and play harder ; )
