No, not at all. People have Rolex's outside of Canada and believe it or not they aren't in constant fear of being robbed.

I’d say yes, and no. I just got back from traveling throughout Japan (by and large, a very safe country) with a ‘67 5512 on my wrist the whole time. I will admit that I chose that piece over bringing one of my two gilt-dialed watches for reasons of preserving the conditions of both, and the fact that a near-perfect gilt dial is a rarity. I’m sure they would’ve been fine (and they’re both insured) but, yes, the fact that they’re more valuable was the decidinh factor for not bringing one.
And jet-lag sucks....as I type this while wide-awake at 4:30AM EST! |

My dad had his Sub stolen last year in Chile. Right off his wrist. Didn't even know what happened.

Got robbed at gun point in broad daylight on the Main Street in the financial district in Bogota several years ago. So, I think you’ll find a variety of perspectives on your question.

My mother was robbed at knife point in Rio for her rather generic Seiko...it doesn't have to be a Rolex. When I travel to developing countries I wear a watch that I like but I really wouldn't care if it disappeared.

Why would you want to travel in a vintage Rolex? The golden rule of travel, don't wear anything that is more than 2 times local monthly income (or even less). I have a number of watches to choose from, but when I travel, I usually wear something like a basic Luminox

I have a 1016 knockoff (one of those Tiger cases with a Miyota inside) I wear while travelling, looks okay, and if I lose it, no tears. I wouldn't feel comfortable getting drunk at the bar on the beach with my genuine 1016 on, and holidays are for relaxing IMO.
Touristy bits of well-behaved Japan? Sure. Phuket, Bangkok, San Fran, Manila? Maybe not. I walk around Toronto with no worries, but Toronto's pretty safe compared to most places. |
