First Rolex

Going to buy a Rolex in the next couple of weeks.
Can you go wrong with a Gmt master2 or a submariner date?

As models, they are among the best. But you can go wrong with any model if you are buying preowned from sketchy sellers on eBay or Craigslist.

Both are great, great, timeless choices that you can wear a lifetime and in pretty much any situation. Excellent choices.

Can't go wrong with either. One significant difference is the bracelet. The Sub is a brushed steel bracelet with the ever fantastic glide lock adjustment. The GMT has polished center links and an easy link adjustment for the length.

My personal preference for a sports model is all brushed links, so of the two I prefer the Sub. If you want a little more flash go with the GMT.

Yes

Do you like them?
Do they fit?
Are they within your budget?
Do you need a GMT or a dive watch?

I bought my first Rolex a couple months ago - I went with the GMT over the Sub. Really, you'll need to try both of them on, but you might find this helpful as far as my thought process:

- Submariners are everywhere. GMT is more unique.
- I travel a lot and communicate regularly with offshore teams, so the GMT complication is pretty helpful. I have the GMT hand set to my home time, so when I travel, I can jump the hour hand to the new location. When I'm at home, I'll leave the bezel rotated to show India time at a glance
- Slimmer case that sits flatter on the wrist - easy to slip under a shirt cuff. The PCL, which I was originally unsure about, really look phenomenal and help the watch dress up with a suit. I'm fine with the scratches - even a brushed bracelet would accumulate them. For me, they've mostly been confined to the clasp, which doesn't bother me. I bought the watch to wear it.
- Dial accents: I love the green GMT hand. Plus, the GMT Master II text blends into the dial a little, so it looks like there's less of a paragraph on the dial. I'm really not a fan of the 4 lines of text at the bottom of Sub dials, in addition to the Oyster Perpetual Date text at 12.

Welcome to TRF!

Either model is a good buy! I would buy new from an AD, don’t go used or gray marker for your first one. Just a suggestion though, do what feels right!

Great pieces if you can find either without paying a significant premium.

You can get a GMT slightly cheaper I believe. Don't buy on cost though. Sub has the glidelock and is better for fitment. GMT has more functionality with time zone. Buy the one that sings to you. Be prepared to buy from a trusted seller cause they are not available most of the time at the AD now. Either one is a great choice!

I bought the GMT first. I do more traveling than swimming.

Both are great choices. I find the GMT function a bit more useful to me for traveling and international business.

Try both on several times. You should ask ppl here. Get what you want. Now I would personally pick a sub bc all the links are brushed and PCL get scratched just by looking at them ...also the GMT function really doesn't do anything for me. And the SS sub date is classic.

Good luck !

If you are buying SS in these you should be safe. TT and PM purchases look for a discount if you can get one unless it is a hot new offer. I love the line, "first Rolex;" I can see many more on the horizon!!!

Submariner may be the only watch you'll ever need. GMT is a great one as well.

You can't go wrong with any watch as long as it's the one you want.

As you are in the UK and buying in the next couple of weeks I assume you are buying used. My advice would be very careful and don't part with any money without being 100% convinced about the seller.

Regarding GMT or Sub, both are great watches

I didn't realise how hard it was to find them so have joined a waiting list for the submariner date. I called probably about 30 stores and no one has them.

I've been on the list for a Submariner Date for 10 months now and according to my AD I only have another 10 months to go

To be fair, yes I can probably get it sooner with a little bit of work and plenty of phone calls but I'm in no hurry and even if they called tomorrow I'd probably have to pass it up at the moment.

If you haven't tried one on before it might be worth checking out some pre-owned dealers in the mean time to make sure it's the watch you actually want. There is no point waiting for 12 months or so only to find you don't like the watch on the wrist
