Icon5 OP 39 + Cash For DJ 41 - Worth The Hassle?

Hi guys!

Wanted to pick the forum's brains on this one...

I've got an Oyster Perpetual 39mm 114300 with the Rhodium dial. It's a 'special' watch given it was my first Rolex and at the time the one that appealed to me. Recently I've been drawn to the 41 mm DateJust and have been playing with the idea of flipping my OP + Cash for it.

Given how relatively new the DateJust 41 is, is it worth waiting a little to see if more pop up on the used market or if prices drop (wishful thinking I know)? In terms of resale value of the OP 39, I'm not getting as good a deal as I would like here in AbuDhabi so the thought of putting in that much more to get a DJ41 makes me wonder if it'll be worth it.

Value any thoughts etc.

Which DJ41 are you looking at?

I'd add, don't sell your first Rolex.

I did because the one I wanted was too similar to the one I had (fluted DJ2 - - > Skyd). The DJ41 will likely take up most of your wrist time, so my advice is to sell the OP. It's not going to become any more valuable or rare in any case, you can always buy another OP if you feel the desire to.

That is gorgeous. Maybe even makes me wonder about my assessment that its a little too blingy for me and I'm looking at the oyster bracelet and domed bezel.

Depends on how much you want the DJ.

If you dislike the OP39 get rid of it. If you like the OP39 keep it as it was your first and from AD. If your able buy DJ41 or wait till you can. You might as well share and swap the watches you wear with your wife when you get bored. Women today wear OP36, OP39, DJ41, Daytona and Submariner

I got the OP39 blue before the dj41 came out and at first I kept thinking to myself, “damn I wish I waited and bought the dj41 instead” BUT a year or so later I really enjoy the OP. I think I’ll add the DJ in the future, I’d recommend the same to you

Even though I don't wear my TT DJ very often it has sentimental value to me. I wouldn't sell the OP.

I would go try on the DJ41 in all configurations and see if it really does it for me. You will also be able to hear from an AD what the thoughts are on price and availability going forward. Take your box and papers and leave it in the car or gym bag so if the AD wants to deal and everything is right you can. I would not get sentimental over a watch. It does not matter if it was your first, I would be more concerned about your last and what that means. A quote that I like is, "You have to be a very rich person to be sentimental about things because they are the only ones who can afford to set aside logic and reason." Have fun, get your watch if you want it and move on. There will always be another and it is part of the fun.

I think it's worth the flip. The DJ41 is a more interesting and better looking watch in my opinion.

Hmmmm well what I’m getting quoted for my OP on the local used market isn’t even half of the cost of a new DJ41. And that’s with a discount! Hence I’m considering if it’s worth the essentially paying ‘double’ for the DJ41. If I was going for something like the HULK wouldn’t be hard to justify if you know what I mean.

What is the "local used market" ???

When my wife and I looked to sell our DJ26, DJ36, and Sub 16610 last year we had some offers from traders/retailers and considered selling privately.

BUT... when we took these to our AD in the UK he explained that although Rolex won't allow more than a 5% discount on our new DJ31 and DJ41 he could take the three used watches in a trade and offered us MUCH more than we'd been offered elsewhere. I'm talking THOUSANDS more. He could do this as although Rolex monitor the prices ADs sell watches for they don't care what an AD pays for a trade-in. This allowed the AD to effectively discount the new watches by 25%.

Have you told your AD you have a watch to trade? If not, and you're already talking prices and (small) discounts it may be too late to introduce the OP. So go to another AD?

By the way, I'd had my DJ36 for 15 years, initially kept it in the safe when I bought the Sub, but didn't take it out again and after 4 weeks decided I'd fallen out of love with it due to it suddenly looking too small. If you're sure you prefer the DJ41, why keep the OP?

Hi David. Couldn't help but notice 'Leicestershire' underneath your name. I'm actually a Leicester lad born and raised now living out in Dubai and AbuDhabi. So here in the UAE - AD's dont buy back watches. So that's not an option. Having said that, I'm wondering if I should do that when I'm back in the UK this summer.

I'm weighing up the options. It's just not the right time atm for me to spend that kind of money on a watch I'm only 70% sure about. The other which I didn't mention was the HULK but that's a separate post all together! lol

If you are a one watch guy then do the move w/out regards to the money if you want the DJ if you are like me when my mind says I gotta have something I gotta have it. An OP and DJ could certainly coexist in a two watch collection if you want to just save up for the DJ.

Value retention even with Rolex is fickle. OP's and DJ's aren't as easy to move along so dealers will offer way less than you expect in relation to what you paid. Moving them along yourself is slow and tedious compared to sport models therefore you have to be more sure of your decision when dropping the money on them. Keep in mind the DJ will drop like a rock too so make sure you buy it right.

Try to sell the OP privately? Even if there is lower demand than SS sport, you should still get a better price.

That said, there aren't that many no-date options with Rolex, and it's good to have one, meaning, I'd keep the OP for a while.

It's nice to have a no-date watch, and there aren't many options with Rolex, so I'd keep the OP for a bit longer it it were me.

It is your 1st Rolex, don’t flipped. Plus you bought it brand new. Datejust isn’t that hard to find on a used market, just saved and buy it once you find the right deal.

Hmm...tough one. Financially, you're getting hosed. But, it sounds to me like your heart is set on the DJ. And it is a great watch...the new jubilee and easy link are an awesome combo, IMO. So, go get it.

Yes, if you want something that bad, it’s worth it, even if you take a hit financially. The way I look at it, I’m taking a hit already by buying one. There’s no better feeling than getting the watch you want, even if it means selling a watch that has some sentimental value.
