The next Rolex Variant collectors will be fighting over...
I spoke to a friend in the music industry who is a big watch collector and friends with other well known watch collectors. The watch that is secretly discussed and being bought up in complete sets is this one..

Here’s the thought process:
The Explorer is an icon. Short hands, an anomaly. Made for a short run 5-6 years and was not highly coveted at the time therefore low numbers. Contrast that to the 1016 which was made for 27 years and is fetching big $$. Many have and are being updated to full lume dial and updated hands either by request or done during service which means even less available. White gold numerals and the slightly more glossy dial and more dial exposure by less hands equals a more “dressy” version vs the more sporty full lume. Rolex collectors like mistakes and oddities. There have already been cult like names given to the watch like short hands, T-Rex, etc. Cult status already in motion. |

I believe this more than the D blue or the SD 43 and pretty much any other watch people pre-emptively designate as collectible and then they prepare for that day by keeping it mint and in a safe. With so many pristine examples, it now never will be. The Explorer, i could see that, especially for one in mint condition.
9 times out of 10 collectibility is an accident and it catches people by surprise

The first rumblings of this were in 2010, immediately after the 39mm v.1 came out. People noted the short hands, said Rolex would correct them, which would make the short-hand version a limited release and therefore highly collectible. I think a lot of the people advancing this theory were joking, but they may have been more right than they knew. Obviously one part of the equation happened; it remains to be seen if the remainder holds true. Makes no difference to me either way, since I only buy what I like to wear. I never liked the v.1, so the collectors are welcome to as many as they can get their hands on.

I've definitely noticed an uptick in interest and/or people posting about getting one (or maybe it's the Baader-Meinhof Phenomenon?) I know I've been really close to getting an Explorer since the lumed dial debuted (2016?)

There’s definitely an uptick in price and demand. Prior to Christmas I saw a few in low $4,000 range. Now mid $5k and selling quickly.

This could be in part due to buyers not being able to find other SS models in stock, not because the Explorer is ‘more’ desirable.

For the most part true but what is unique about the short hands is not only have they gone up in value but they are disappearing. This time last year I’d see 5-6 at a time on watchrecon. Not anymore.

The next modern collectible is already here and prices are already changing and that’s the SD4K made for only a couple years.
