Sla017 vs 14060?

Hi guys,

Just wondering if owners of the gorgeous SLA017 also own A Rolex Submariner and can comment on the comparisons. My 14060M Sub is fantastic but the Seiko seems very interesting.

"interesting" is the right word.

Great retro design, but I can't get passed on the substance itself. Feels like SBDX001/017 has everything that it has but for "fraction" of the price.

That's just me. Don't get me wrong, I like the watch and I think its exclusive. My wallet doesn't agree.

Agree with that. It’s the same movement as the Sbdx017 at half the price. Bit overrated.

I loved mine (SLA017), but it was ultimately too big for my tastes, mostly too thick, but also a big large in other ways. But I like smaller watches. It's amazing just to look at tha thing though -- a stunner.

Way too thick! I sold mine and am back to my Tudor Sub from 1991.

The Seiko is way too thick. Can’t really fit on my cuffs. The Sub ND is a home run both versatile and classic.

They are both great watches.
The Seiko has a date feature which I like, and the dial is more alluring than the small dot dial Submariner.
The lume on the Seiko is surprisingly much better than the Rolex.
The Submariner does wear flatter on the wrist, but this isn't a deal breaker because we are talking about dive watches, which one may expect to have a bit of thickness.
The Submariner has 20mm lugs which is a great size for aftermarket straps while the Seiko has 18.8mm lugs (19mm).
For me personally the dial and date of the SLA017 wins out and it comes standard with an Oyster style bracelet in the package.
The SLA017 was limited to 2,000 so it will become less common over time.

I've posted these at some point before, but they give a good idea of how the Seiko slots in between a 14060M and a 16660. I give the 5 digit Sea-Dwellers the nod for best go anywhere Rolex diver, but the Seiko is an incredibly well designed and finished watch. It's everything Seiko does best in a reissue of its most historic dive watch.

Thanks a million for the replies. I currently have a G-Series 14060M like the one pictured on the right and it wears perfectly...just melts away on the rest. I was looking for another watch to compliment the Sub and the Seiko looked very interesting. I will be checking out the Seiko this week and will update on what I find. The case thickness is very noticeable in the pics.......

I find wearing the SLA017 on the rubber strap is the most comfy for me, on NATO not so much, haven’t tried bracelet, my Rolex subs are on bracelets & I figured it’s a nice change.

I had the SLA017 and SubC at the same time. The SLA017 is more casual but if it’s going to be part of a collection, that’s not necessarily a bad thing. The OEM silicone strap and bracelet aren’t great but it looks great on a NATO or a tropic strap. I ended up trading the SubC for a Hulk as I got green fever but The SubC and SLA017 co-existed in my rotation just fine. I wore the Seiko more on the weekends or traveling while the SubC got more wrist time during the work week.

Two very different watches. Dial alone makes enough difference to me. 14060 sits flat while SLA017 is a bit taller which doesn’t bother my 7” wrist. I like SLA017 with rubber or leather strap while I wear my 14060 with mostly bracelet and NATO strap in summer. I think these two could be great for any collection. Here are my humble diver collection. Cheers.
