Boxes from Watches, What to do?

Hi, I have a question and a bit of dilemma. I have over 40 watches in my collection, and whats more important, over 40 boxes from those watches as well. What you see on a picture is half of them. I store the boxes in one of my storage units, but today when I went there to get something I realized I have too many of them thas just laying there and collecting dust.

I know some people store watches in the original boxes and that sounds kind of ridiculous to me, especially for people with a lot of watches.
The nicer boxes which I have from Patek, Rolex, Cartier, Hublot, Omega and others sell on ebay for good money. But then again its good to have a box in case (which I doubt) if I would ever want to sell a watch.

Question, do you guys keep your boxes or you sell them?
Or maybe something else?
Thanks.

If you have one for a early 1990’s sub I’d love to buy one!

I presume you don’t need the money (based on the size and scope of your collection) so why would you sell them?

And considering the size of your collection you may decide to sell some one day and having the box would be a good thing then.

I kept mine. Except the first two TAG that my mom threw away. If you really need money, sell. If you really need the space, sell. Otherwise, keep them.
Even if you don't ever sell the watch, when you are ready to pass down the watches to your kids or family, it is better to present them in the original box.

No value in the boxes, get rid off them, just keep the papers

I keep them. Occasionally I sell something and having the box and papers really helps.

But.....A collection of 40? How do you decide what to wear? I'd sell 30 or so and consolidate.....you'll need the boxes then.

Well since I dont keep watches home for obvious reasons, I just decide what i will wear this month, go to bank and get 5-6 watches for this month. And just rotate, this way I make sure I am wearing pretty much everything.
Plus I am constantly adding new pieces, jut got GMT Master II Pepsi this week, and thinking to get 2 tone Daytone after the summer.

Fair enough. It's nice "discovering" a watch again after not wearing it for a while. I guess with a big collection you get to have that pleasure more often.

Come off it mate!

You own 40 watches including Pateks, Rolexes and Hublots. Your house must be gigantic. I bet your bathroom is as big as my house. Storing the boxes shouldn’t be a problem!

Don't have that problem yet, currently at 9 or 10 boxes give or take (with wife's etc.) so closet is still roomy enough. When I get there, perhaps I will start using the attic.

I keep them always. There’s always a premium for boxes and papers. I store them in plastic bins. If it weren’t for easy pickins for a burglar, some of them would actually look pretty cool on bookshelves. Never thought about it.

Some of those boxes are big enough for ski boots.
You must have a big wrist

I have a much smaller collection - but I store and keep all the boxes! To me it is a 'part' of the watch and definitely when time comes to sell - I pass that on with it! If you have that many watches I assume finding room to store boxes is not an issue.

These watches will last for decades and the box and papers will add thousands to the value of the watches if your heirs want to sell them 100 years from now.

I would definitely keep them if it were me. As we all know it's always a big plus to have the original box(es) with the watch as well as all of the original paperwork. If you do decide to sell these boxes, I'm sure you'll be able to "unload" them here on the forum. Please let us know if you do as I might be interested in a few. Thanks!

And about your 40+ watch collection.....

You could sell them on ebay for an 80 dollar average and then buy another watch with the funds!

Everything that come with the watch should you keep. Just look at vingtage Rolex that is full set. When it's complete it have a better
value and it's easier to sell. Even if you don't believe you will sell one of you watches so can things change.

If you see your role as a steward of these watches, then I’d continue keeping their boxes and associated collateral. Safely label and store them in water resistant bins with desiccant packets or cans.

While your storage unit appears climate controlled, a burst pipe (or a fire alarm triggered from a different unit in the facility) can unleash a deluge of water ruining all of them.

On the other hand, if not a steward, ditch everything except their removable bracelet links.

I would buy a couple of the large cardboard cartons that removalists use and spend an hour or two finding how to arrange them to get the largest number of watch boxes in each carton. Then I'd seal them up and store them somewhere convenient (with the types of watch box recorded on the outside of the carton)

I put mine in plastic storage bins with relatively good seals on the lids, throw in a couple of dessicant packs and seal it closed. I put them in a closet.

Whenever I need something out of a box, I replace the dessicant pouches.
