I used to love TRF, just like I used to love Facebook...
But as of late, the threads are killing me. Facebook used to be cool, then it just turned into a bunch of political bs news stories....I've only been around these parts for a few years, but TRF has morphed into a valuation, I hope my Rolex will be the next big collectable thing when it's discontinued, I have inside unconfirmed "official" info, blah blah blah blah.....
WHAT HAPPEN TO THE DAYS WHEN PEOPLE WERE ON HERE JUST TO ENJOY WATCHES? Share what they bought, compliment someone on their new incoming, discuss the pros and cons of a new reference, give pointers about Rolex I would have never known had I not joined like the proper GMT hand stack. I know, many of you are thinking, "well stop logging in then." You know what, lately, I haven't been. I remember the days when I would log on first thing in the morning, spend an hour drinking coffee reading the threads, looking at the incomings. Now I log on and briefly scan over all of the "it's official" or the "it's collectable even though there's 500,000 of them" or you name it.... Social media has ruined rolex for me just like it has ruined everything else in life I enjoy. Oh well. I guess times are changing and I'm just not changing as fast. My $.02. Stepping down from the soapbox....Had to vent. |

well i can say perhaps you should read my interviews as referenced in my signature.
i dont mind all the thread diversity. keeps it interesting for me. now rolex supply is no fun right now but that has little to do with the forum.

You can be more selective, there is still a lot of traffic on this forum, still the leading one on luxury watches, so don't have to be so defeatist and dramatic... like many who ruin SM.

I had a similar thread just a little while back ...
I understand... One just has to lighten up a bit ... It’s a Motley Crue on this site around here ... https://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=594417 |

This is ridiculous.
What are you looking to get out of posting this? You don’t like it? Move on.

People have been the same since the dawn of time. There is noise everywhere. Social media has ruined Rolex did you? Just like everything else in life that you enjoy? Really? Are you even reading what you wrote? Man up. I’m personally annoyed 17 times a day at the BS the world has to provide. Social media simply shines a light at what has always been. Again, man up. You going to post something for all to view and comment on, expect that some of the responses you get will be unsavory. And if you don’t like it, challenge it, or move on to something you do like.

I’m challenging it. Exactly, it’s online stuff. It’s a watch forum. Not a big deal. You see me as taking it personal. I’m actually trying to help.

Looking at a decade !! This is still the best place to discuss all issues of fine timepieces, bar none. Just read the posts you like and ignore the ones you don't ...... In the grand scheme of things - it's a privilege to be a member and share the burden of owing fine timepieces

I try to select the thread that I read and contribute to the discussion. I also try to start my thread that I believe can have a good discussion. However, not all of my thread has been well received but that’s ok. I move on and read the next thread.

I think what Seth was saying is that if you're not engaged just find another place that'll give you what you're looking for. For me, I just ignore the noise. I find TRF an amazing community full of color. Regardless of watches or not.

Yeah, I agree. If you find a thead with a title that you believe un-interesting or even ridiculous, then move on. Open disucssion is exactly that, a diverse, OPEN DISCUSSION forum.

It was bad for a few months with the Rolex price rants, but it’s smoothed out and getting back to normal.
The Patek forum sucks now with never ending aquanaut and nautilus threads crying about trying to get one for MSRP when nobody wanted one a year or two ago. Same for the 15202. |

The watches sit at kind of a sweet spot, where they attract all sorts of posters for all sorts of reasons. I gather these reasons (and posters) come and go, perhaps like fashion. The threads seem to be a reflection of that fashionable diversity.

OP, I understand your position. Remember though how the prices have risen over the years.
My first Rolex was $3,200 and my latest $12K. Many here do not dabble at the low end where I do. So if I worry about value I can only imagine what others who buy much higher grades than I do also have a care about value. Is it a topic to obsess over? Probably not, but at those values I can readily understand why someone might. |
