Paying full retail for Explorer 39 mm

Hi guys,

I would like your opinion on this: what do you think about paying full retail for a current generation explorer 1 39 mm? I can't get a discount where I live and I don't love the idea of buying pre-owned. After taxes I am looking at 6500 USD. Will the watch retain its value bought at this price? (I am not thinking about reselling it soon, I just want the peace of mind of knowing that my investment would be somewhat safe).

Thank you.

I would do it. It's hard enough to get any SS as is today, and although Exp 1 may be one of the easier ones to locate, it's still not a bad deal to pay just MSRP. Don't want to pass up the opportunity now to have it vs. trying to save maybe 5% discount?

Good luck!

Buy the watches you want to wear.

Invest long term in blue chip stocks.

Post photos tomorrow evening of the watch after it’s unboxed.

You would loose about a grand buying at that price but if you like the watch who cares. Its worth it.

Retail is $6550 and you're getting after taxes at $6500. What's the discussion? Just get it IMO!!

Buy the watch to wear and if it does alright in the long run that's great. In the current watch collecting climate, any SS professional series watch is a catch. Will it retain its value in the long term...better than many other brands sure, but for strict investment purposes, you're better off parking your cash in stocks, bonds, even some precious metals.

Rolex just happens to retain its value better than many brands, but I wouldn't consider them as a means of investing. Its similar to an AP or Patek in the sense you won't really 'lose' much if any if you decide to sell/trade. My .02 on the topic.

That's the same price trusted sellers are asking for one. I'd say do it.

Do it. I just bought mine on Saturday from an AD. As for the retaining money part, keep in mind that you will almost always lose some money if you engage with a third party (seller/shop) because they also have to make their margin.

I appreciate everyone's take on this!

Just to be clear, I am not looking to make money on the watch. I understand it is not an investment. What I meant is I just want to make sure most of the value will be retained. That's one of the big things about Rolex. We all know that they are overpriced, but as long as they retain value that doesn't matter as much, because in case you want to sell it you recover most / all your money.

Fraz,
you are approaching this purchase with too much 'value' in your mind. Most people won't call Rolex watches 'overpriced'. For the most part, they are priced right, and in some cases, at MSRP, priced TOO LOW for the current market conditions.

At $6500 BNIB OTD you are at a great price point. Try selling it after purchase (next day, here on TRF) and you will be lucky to be able to sell it for $4500, perhaps $5000 if you are lucky and find a face to face deal where you are.

Don't buy it because of the 'value' it retains. Buy it if you like it and you think you will keep it for a long while.

Exactly, buy the watch not the price. I know it's a tough pill to swallow as last year even in the UK you could get a discount on this, but we sure ain't in Kansas no more so retail is a nice deal.

And the Rolex 904L SS is fine, doesn't scratch any more than other SS.

I believe I paid $6500 even out the door for mine in 2016 so that sounds reasonable. It's a nice watch I love mine and is a great starter piece

Interesting. What should a person do? If one wants to buy a new watch nobody is discounting, and you refused to pay retail, then how do you buy a watch?

I agree. Not on a common SS watch like an Explorer. I got mine when the SS shortage frenzy started and still got a really nice discount from an AD. MSRP is $7500 CAD and I paid $7000 CAD with the %12 tax in.

In all honesty I would have had no problem paying MSRP since it is such a nice watch.

The MOST discount you could hope for is 10%. $650. In the grand scheme of things that is not much really. If you like the watch buy it. If it was important enough to save money you would buy used. But it seems more important to buy new, therefore you may the new price.
