Rolex is on fire. It's the hottest watch brand on the planet right now.
No other brand even comes close: Patek, Omega, AP, etc. Everyone wants a Rolex! When Rolex speaks, the world listens very attentively!

mass market i absolutely agree. Thats the genius of Rolex. It is the biggest aspirational brand for anyone who just wants a "nice watch". Its not a bad thing and there are many, many brands above their level but they have that market cornered.

Certainly some truth to your post but as much I love Rolex, I'm over it for now. Nothing is greater than Patek to me right now.

Not everyone wants Rolex. They are certainly other watch brands and most do a pretty good job. Rolex only holds its vue pretty well, that is all.

I think i have simple, middle tier, watch tastes. I like Rolex and own sonne. I do not like the appearance of either a PP or other much more expensive watches. Cost is, of course, an issue. I wouldn't be able to reasonably buy a PP.

It's hard to argue with that observation given the frenzy of late.

PP and AP are equally hot but they are playing in different leagues. You can buy a Submariner for $7500 and it’s a no-compromise watch. AP and PP don’t compete at that price point, but at the price point they compete at they are extremely hot.

Brands are purely subjective things.
Ferrari is arguably the world's greatest brand but neither the brand nor the cars have any emotional impact on me at all. Same goes for Pagani. And Patek too. I can acknowledge their greatness but they mean nothing to me. On the other hand some other brands have a real emotional grab on me. Porsche, Rolex, Adidas, HP, MUFC. Can't be rationalised. |

That’s branding. It’s all about emotion and relevance rather than logic, it affects everyone differently. I like the look of that car but I have 4 kids, so it’s not relevant enough for me to build up any emotional feelings towards it, hence I drive a 7 seat 4x4 and wouldn’t even consider this Italian beauty! I bought my 15400 for around $11k...those days are long gone and lucky if you can find one at an AD or boutique. Also went to goyard after to buy some gifts for the wives. There was a wait to get in. The high end luxury market is at a high again. |

I'm not totally convinced that the popularity, some might say, 'worldwide dominance' of Rolex, is necessarily a good thing.
I'm an old geezer, but, not too long ago very few people knew what my GMT was. In the last 6 months, I have had more comments (from complete strangers) than in the last 40+ years. Man, noticing my GMT, " thas one of them Rolex DeepSea's, innit, mate. Wossit werf"? I used to be able to wear my watch almost, anywhere on this planet and not even think about getting 'turned over' for it, and that includes East London! But today, I pull my sleeve down, more than I used too. The atmosphere on this great forum has changed too. Our favourite brand, seems to me at least, to have become a badge of 'Honour' for certain groups and a source of self aggrandisement and boastfulness. Some OP's show photo's of, theirs, or someone else's pride and joy, and of course, in doing so are requesting, approval and comment. Then, get all defensive and semi-aggresive when the opinions don't coincide with theirs. We are all proud of our Rolexes, I hope. Not too much wrong with that, but I'm getting the feeling that some of them are being worn in the same fashion as the giant VW or Mercedes and Audi 'necklaces' in the 80's? and by association, the Rolex, hard fought for, image of a relatively understated, high quality product, is being tarnished, and will/has become known more for it's BLING BLING than any other of its attributes. I worry about Rolex and whether, as a very long time wearer I want to be associated with what it's becoming. A brand for slimey dealers, investors, show offs, film stars, wannabe film stars, sports stars, pop stars, and all the other accompanying celebrity wannabe's. There was a time when any 'good' magazine had a full page Rolex ad that would often include, what are called 'Ambassadors'. Great people, ranging from arctic explorers, mountaineers and racing drivers, champion golfers, aeronautics pioneers and tennis champions. Given Rolex's apparent target market, who will be the next line of 'Ambassadors'? St. Roger can't go on much longer can he. Maybe Rolex are just makin' hay, while the sun shines, for a younger buyer and ever advancing technology, and a suddenly shrinking mechanical watch market are surely on the horizon...... Nobody give a jot, what my opinion is. The profits will keep rolling into Geneva, and that's the main thing, isn't it......well,it is, isn't it? |

Is Rolex like a Beeny Baby now?
[QUOTE=Lt Virgil Hilts;8641032]I'm not totally convinced that the popularity, some might say, 'worldwide dominance' of Rolex, is necessarily a good thing.

A brand for slimey dealers, investors, show offs, film stars, wannabe film stars, sports stars, pop stars, and all the other accompanying celebrity wannabe's. I tend to agree. Lots of clowns and posers now bringing a “Beeny Baby” hysteria to the brand. As a Rolex owner for nearly 45 years, I’m amused but saddened when someone brags about paying $5000 over list for a SS Daytona. And don’t get me started on the topic of day flippers. |
