When to fix bracelet stretch.
I recently purchased a Rolex 16013. In general it is in good condition but it does have some bracelet stretch as expected for a watch of its age.
I am thinking of sending to Michael Young to be tightened. As it is currently in otherwise good condition and does not require a polish, I asked MY if they polish after the repair and have been told a polish is necessary to remove the tool marks but I can request for only this type of polish and the rest of the bracelet to be left alone, which is helpful. Based on its current stretch, would you: a) send it off now or b) wait a couple of years until it could do with a general tidy up and send it in then |

I would leave it as is.

There is plenty of life left in that bracelet, some wear but hardly wore out. However, if it bothers you, the restoration bill will most likely be cheaper to repair now than to wait until it is totally used up.

Can you tell me ,what exactly do they do to tighten up a bracelet ? My brothers sub bracelet could probably use some tightening. I have never had a watch that got that loose.

Michael Young explains the process in one of the threads here. Quite good actually. The pry open each link and insert a sleeve in each worn-out hole.

I have a DayDate that I bought in the early 90s. I wear it daily. It has a droopy bracelet. I have a new GMT II with a taut bracelet. I have a 6 year old DateJust that has a fairly tight bracelet. I think the droopy bracelet feels better

I would wait about 5 years and then get a new bracelet.

OP, keep an eye on it though. Don’t do what my dad did to his TT jubilee. He wore it almost out. You could just about twist it around into a pretzel. He just quit wearing it after it got so loose. It’s just been sitting in my safe for 10 years since he passed away. I was thinking about him and on his birthday I decided I would get it repaired. It’s at Michael Young’s getting rejuvenated. I can’t wait to wear it.

Seems the general opinion is to leave it for now.
To be honest it looks fine whist on the wrist, I think one of the main reason I want to send it is because of the good reports I have heard from Michael Young's work an the fact its relatively cheap. |
