Don’t Write Off the Drop-In SS Daytona Find

I’ve owned a TT Datejust for about 20 years. Have wanted a Day-Date for probably 15 years. Just couldn’t pull the trigger on a 36mm one. Always wanted a white dial, and when the DD40 came out, I thought all I was waiting for was a white dial to be released in the 40. Before Rolex released the white dial in a 40, I fell in love with the SS Daytona. Still wanted a Day-Date, but also wanted a Sports Watch and the Daytona hit the spot.

I put my name down on a list with one dealer here in Dallas. No call after many months, but I’m way down their list. Went to another dealer in Memphis, Tennessee while there on a trip, and got on their list. Again, nothing from them and that was months ago. Went to another local dealer in Dallas, and they won’t take my name for their list because it is full, but promised to call me when the next slot on their list opens up. I’ve made calls and stopped in to numerous other AD’s in the U.S., one overseas and had my Air Force brother-in-law look in Japan, all to no avail.

In the meantime, after continuing to go back and forth between the DD36 and DD40, I decided on the 40. We’ve been really blessed at our company with several good years in a row, and I decided I would try to buy both the DD40 and SS Daytona together, knowing buying the DD has a shot at moving me up a list to get the Daytona.

Took a family vacation to California this past week. Stopped by an AD yesterday on our way to the airport and walked up to their display cases. A salesman came up, and I told him I was looking for a DD40 with white dial. He said he’d have to order it. I just wanted to try it on in front of my wife to make sure the 40 was the one. I tried on a DD40 with silver Romans, and it was the right size and fit. I was getting on a plane in 2 hours, and laughingly said I don’t suppose you have a ceramic Daytona waiting for the next person who comes in and orders a Day-Date do you? He walked in the back, walked out 1 minute later and shows me the watch you see below. It is scheduled to arrive Tuesday. :) The DD40 with white Romans arrives in a few weeks.

I was stunned and thrilled. FYI, I had no relationship with the dealer or the salesman, and had never heard of the place before. I realize how unlikely this is, but it felt like finding buried treasure. Buried treasure that you have to pay for, but buried treasure nonetheless. :)

I have been on this Forum for a couple of years, have anxiously awaited Basel releases for the last 2 or 3, and have read more posts on this site than I can count. Y’all helped me decide which watches I wanted - type, size, color, etc. I know how fortunate I am to be able to afford these watches, and am thankful God has blessed us.

Thought I’d share this news with the Forum I’ve learned so much from about Rolex, watches, VAT, and many other topics these last few years. Thank you all!

Congrats, right place at the right time and it paid off! If you don't mind sharing, which AD did you pick this up at?

To not get them in any trouble with their regular customers, I’d rather not say. I’ll ask salesman if he minds, and if not, I’ll post tomorrow.

You’re lucky you were already in the market for a PM piece.

It doesn’t sound like they’d have sold you the Daytona, or even shown it to you otherwise

Regardless, congratulations are in order, wear them in the best of health

Yep. I'm sure these watches sit as incentive for PM purchases. Congrats though OP it's a great pair you picked up.

Yeah, many congrats, and never hurts to have a DD serve as a sweetner to get this basic bi**h.

Proves the point, buy something expensive and desirable pieces will appear magically.

Great story!

These references are out 100% out there - you just have to find them.

I’ve been amazed a few times what I’ve found on vacation when buying my wife jewelry...and have had a chance to buy...

I wouldn’t really call this a “ I just popped in and left with a daytona” thread, you spent 37k on a pm Rolex they make 40% on and in return they offered u a daytona as a thank you for the multiple steak dinners they r gonna have with the profits off both.

Lol with that said congrats on the 2 new pieces n wear em in good health.

Congrats to OP on two beautiful watches. But I agree with the above. If you paid MSRP for both, I would guess the total bill was no cheaper than buying both brand new from a Trusted Seller, where the Daytona would be $8,000 above MSRP and the Day-Date would be an $8,000 discount.

If you got a good price on the Day-Date, then you hit a home run! If not, you hit a home run in terms of getting two great watches.

Congrats on the two in-comings!

I wonder what would have happened if you started the convo with the Daytona first .. then when he denied they had any, moved to the DD40 (placed the order), and watched him magically say 'oh wait, I think I may have a Daytona in the back'

I paid MSRP for the Daytona. I definitely didn’t pay MSRP for the DD40. :)

True, but you still had to buy a DD40.

Congrats on both for sure! You got what you wanted and then some. That's rare these days.

Congrats!

I wonder if you told him that now you have bought the Daytona, you no longer have enough fund to buy the DD and want to cancel it, he will still sell you the watch.
