"The Friendly Giant" TV Show from the 1970's
Many of you may remember this great old show...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Vm2-JUldNw During my drinking days, we were on some weird topic of profound childhood memories or something, so I was telling a friend how the opening of, "The Friendly Giant", the recorder playing the theme song, used to actually make a buddy of mine, huge guy, literally burst into tears, he couldn't help it for some reason, just always made him cry or get really weepy. Then a very cool, much older gentleman sitting at the bar, turned and said he worked on the show at CBC as a carpenter and worked the various props i.e., when the Cow jumped over the Moon at the end, and the drawbridge opens at the beginning, that it was actually him pulling the strings on the set...hilarious, and talk about star crossed coincidence, telling that story and a guy literally turns around and lays this story on us 30 + years later! He then told us how whenever they had to pack sets up to send the to US, they always used Robertson screws (square head), drove the Americans crazy, because they never had the right Robertson screwdriver. He also mentioned the ongoing pranks they pulled on each other back in the day. Sets coming up in huge boxes from the US, filled with styrofoam and holding only a small prop...was a fascinating guy and worked on many of the old CBC shows. I just saw the opening to this show pop-up and it reminded me, thought I'd share, sheesh, probably not many will remember The Friendly Giant? Mr. Dressup anyone? |

I remember the friendly giant very well! Coming home from ... it was either kindergarten or first grade and hurrying to the TV to watch. Fond memories... But, it must have been mid 60s, I was five, maybe six years old.
