submariner or sea dweller
hi guys i´m new to the forum, I live in mexico and own 2 tudor watches, both 2008 an aeronaut and an iconaut, my third watch is a tag carrera black with silver hands, very elegant. Theres is a rolex distribuitor here in the area and he has a sea dweeler 43mm and i´m mesmerized since I saw it, I want a trade with him and plus give him some more money plus my watches, what I want you guys to help me sort out is if I´m better of with a date submariner or is it more iconic a deep sea 43mm. If I buy the submariner i´ll probably don´t have tu put more money in it, and plus I heard some of you folks say that the submariner is a very iconic watch, probably more so than the deep sea wich is actually the diver watch for rolex, the oficial i mean. Well let me know what are your thougths i´ll be very grateful.

Welcome to the Forum Wally..
The DeepSea Sea Dweller at 43mm is a huge watch with a great set of technical figures. It has only been on the market for a couple of months, so it will be a while before it becomes iconic or carves out it's place in history. If you get one of these you will be one of the truly few who have one.. But you will also have to wear that heavy large stainless steel cased behemoth around all the time. The Rolex Submariner has already made it's place, is recognizable around the world, and can be worn comfortably every day.... If it's my only watch, I might opt for the Sub... If you are a diver aficionado, then the larger DeepSea is for you........

Welcome Wally.
I can only echo what has been said. The Submariner to many is the symbol of Rolex sport watches. A reference that has "been there, done that". A superior watch for everyday wear. My DSSD came in yesterday and I must say it is a supurb watch that is a worthy successor to a proud heritage. I do think that unless your circumstances are special the Submariner will serve you in the best possible manner. |

IMHO the most iconic sub would be the original 6xxx ones back in the 50's, no date. |

It's your choice, but I would go with the Sub.

The Submariner is the quintessential Rolex, recognized the world over as the icon of Rolex reliability and class. The DSSD is big and unless you have really big arms you'll be carrying quite a load every time you use it.

I have the SD and DSSD.
I say get the Sea Dweller, forget the sub. Its an iconic watch as well thats no longer being made as well. If its your only Rolex its a better choice than the DSSD as the DSSD is a bit big and a bit much sometimes. Now that I have both Id never sell either. Even though I knew I was buying a DSSD I bought a SD first....

I would recommend buying the regular Submariner (rated to 300 meters water resistance) unless you are either a: 1) Deep Sea Diver or 2) You are a large sized man who can easily handle the much larger Deep Sea Sea Dweller.
If you are looking for a "tried and tested" model, go for the Submariner. Besides, the Submariner is much easier to wear day to day. Best of luck with your purchase. |

Yes, one of those would be a good choice.

Put it this way,
If you want a good watch that you can wear comfortably then get a Submariner. It's iconic but a lot of people have the watch. The Sea Dweller, is Rolex's professional or commercial dive watch. It is what the pros would probably use if they wore a Rolex to dive, which is comical, with today's dive computers. Get what you want....I would personally get the Deep Sea because it's new and has some of Rolex's new technology incorporated, so to speak. Show a DeepSea owner a Sub and he will say...nice. Show a Submariner owner, your DeepSea and he will lend you his wife. Good luck... |

Welcome Wally,
The DSSD gets my vote. Either way, you can't go wrong with the DSSD or the Sub. |

thanks a bunch guys for the eye opener. Well i´ll probably go for the DSSD the iconaut of TUDOR wich I love is huge too, the case is big and is 43mm and the way tudor ensambles their product makes it look like a powerhouse, ohh and it´s heavy too. Thanks, i`ll save some plus money to get the SDDS. Have a great day.

I was faced with the same delightful problem I went for the Sea Dweller (old style), it's just that little bit different, and it's one tought watch, has'nt left my wrist.

I have had sev eral Sea Dwellers. They are suoperb watches, they are excellent tools. The Deep Sea while nice and with great engineering, is unproven in respect to accuracy, longevity. It just does not have any histiry yet. Kinda like getting a new Microsoft OS. you never buy the newest one out, you wait unitl Service pack 3 comes out then you buy.
For now The 18kt sub bluesy is on my list and the DSSd, but the DSSD is gouing to wait a while longer |

just my 2 cents I would go DSSD if you want a date. I would go sub no date if you simply want a classic that really cant be touched. In my opinion the sub no date has no substitute; whereas the sub date is available in so many trims from steel, tt and gold; to me very common. Sub no date along with SD, Milly and the upcoming DSSD will go down as classics only available in steel models. |
