49 years ago today
I was a 14 year old boy glued to the TV watching them land on the moon. I am still fascinated by space travel and even applied to NASA to be a shuttle pilot back in the day..
Well done Neil, Buzz, Michael and everyone involved. |

There's going to work one day to sit atop a Saturn V rocket waiting for 7.5 million pounds of thrust to launch you to the freakin' moon, and then there's every other job that ever existed.
It had to be the ultimate gig. |

I love having them try to explain why the main competition at the time.. the Soviets...with their own space program's bona fide scientists using actual equipment to monitor and observe the Apollo missions to and from the moon (as well as the Chinese, Japanese, independent observatories, etc etc. doing the same) didn't blow the lid off any NASA/U.S. "fakery" from the outset but instead conceded the point. The Soviet reaction to the Apollo landings wasn't a claim that they didn't happen, but instead they simply claimed there was no race, denying they were planning a manned moon mission themselves (which they were, something conceded later). This would mean the Soviets (and basically everyone else in the entire world who had the actual, scientific means to monitor them) must've somehow been in on NASA's supposed hoax as well, and have never talked. Also, why fake 2 pre-Apollo 11 manned moon orbitals (8 & 10), and then after successfully faking 1 landing, press their luck being exposed by faking it 6 (minus one aborted, 13) more times? The risk associated with fakery, the massive blow to national standing that would result from a hoax being exposed, far outweighs any benefit that would be derived by only pretending you got there first. Much better to try and publicly fail than be caught out since it wasn't a secret program like Soviet's manned lunar program was. Oh right, they did it so decades later someone sitting in their mom's basement who couldn't reverse-engineer a Zippo lighter if their life depended on it and who's understanding of physics is limited to knowing "Terminal Velocity" was a movie starring Charlie Sheen could Google "Moon Landing Hoax", after which they can tell themselves they now hold keen insight into the murky world of grand cover-ups and immune to propaganda meant for the more easily-fooled. |

I know, it's crazy, and I tell those people that during the umpteen thousands of hours I've spent in the sky the world over including their home town laying down chemtrails for the government, I've never seen an alien craft, day or night. Not one.

This really was the pinnacle of United States science and technology and it is something that makes me immensely proud to be an American.
I was 2 years old when we first landed on the moon. |

I remember not only the Moon Landing but a number of broadcasts about one space event or another. We always had something going on, it was extremely fascinating to watch. The Moon Landing was however the icing on the cake.

I remember how I knew every acronym used by Nasa for that mission that was reported by Jules Bergmann and Wally Schirra on ABC and CBS, respectively. Don't remember Mercury program, but I had all the Gemini and Apollo missions memorized. I also distinctly remember leaving a sandlot ballgame with friends to watch coverage of the landing...the walk came much later, around 10PM my local time.
