It’s a matter of personal taste but I really like the new turtles (SRP77X).

There's a Seiko for every budget and everyone's taste.

The choices are so broad that it's hard to recommend anything without knowing something about the recipient.

Is he 15 or 50?

Is he interested in horology or is he just interested in something to tell the time?

Sport or dress?

hahaha okay heres some info;

He's 29
working/in school to become an Architect
He usually wears Nixon, special edition types of watches

I want to get him a diver since he doesn't have one. something he can wear both at work or out and about. he usually only wears his other watched to work now there a bit dressy.

It would be cool to get him a manual winding watch not sure of my options there, I was close to getting him a Speedy but things changed I'll save that for 2.5 years when he graduates and I save a bit more.

the SKX007 looks cool but theres so many damn options I don't know what I should do.

the turtle looks pretty cool too i need to go see them in person!

Most of the newer Seikos in that price band (think SRP’s - the cushion case “turtles” or the angular lugged “samurais”) seem to be using the 4r36, which is a hacking and hand winding movement. That’s generally an easier, but pricier, starting point than an SKX, as those are neither hacking nor hand winding. The SKX is more iconic, though.

The quality is pretty good on all the various SRP’s but I was really impressed by the STO edition (SRPC91). The dial and handset really set it apart from the rest of the model range. Go find a Seiko AD or boutique, and try them on though, since they’re all on the large side.

Another vote for the Turtle. Even if he upgrades later, always good to have a beater in the collection.

I'm an architect, although a little older than your brother. You won't go wrong with an SKX007 as it is a classic.

Skx or turtle or samurai

If you want to spend more, go sumo or shogun.

Turtle, samurai or sumo, sumo if you want something a bit dressier.
All come in at under 500us, all can be manually wound, hacked and have drilled lugs.

SKX cant be wound or hacked, no drilled lugs and compared to the other 3 its very entry level.
