What is the reason why we love watches so much?

I was recently asking myself the question multiple times why i seem to love the Rolex watches so much. Since im used to wear one i have problems with not wearing a wristwatch. Now i see A LOT of wristwatches around and most watches i see are just...... Boring, stupid or idiot persons rocking a nice watch but still the bug has bitten me really really hard...... In fact it is so interessing to me that it keeps me busy all the time, but why?? I don't see a watch as a necesarry item or as a fashion thing but there is something with it... Can't understand what the h it exactly means anyway.... Anyone the same dillema or an explanation WHY you like watches so much? Now since i started with watches i found a lot of brands interessing from Seiko to PP but it seems that only Rolex does the trick for me, the design is so strong that in my opinion it is unbeatable... Many watches i do like for a couple of days but than i forget about them. One thing i dislike about luxury watches is that at least in my country there are a lot of persons wearing one and also a lot of persons where you do not want to be associated with anyhow.... But it seems that it doesnt mind me to much and i really like to wear them myself anyway

I see in watches human effort with engineering, design, craftsmanship, art and history. And that is only in the nutshell. Of course there's a lot more into it. It's all fascinating if you think about.

This is a very well-thought-out, concise, and spot-on answer.

A watch is all those things and more!

To me a real watch person is a man (im not saying women cant be watch people but im male and i can only really speak to a male perspective) that is more than what is traditionally the book cover definition of a man, but in a way that is not obnoxious or ostentatious.

This man has a passion and zest and success to him that is about more than just the money or just having nice things. Anyone that works hard can find the money for something nice that displays that fact, but a real watch guy wears it because hes not necessarily trying to say hes successful, but that he has achieved what he has because he has a love of life and a love of what a human being can do when "the rules" arent what governs him and "good enough" is never acceptable.

You wear a watch because you appreciate art, you appreciate someone pouring their soul into an object and telling you their fears and their passions and their losses and their entire story in a way that isnt just the oprah 5 o'clock special, but also isnt black turtleneck jackson pollock high street abstraction.

This guy isnt impressed with himself, he isnt trying to show you how smart he is or how capable, because its not about that and never has been. Its about seeing with more than just your eyes and working with more than just your hands.

He can wear a timex or a casio to tell time, and in the end if he did it wouldnt make him any different, but he picks up a rolex because its so much like him. Its successful, its hard working, its precise, its worldclass, but most importantly its more than the sum of these things put together. Its not anything you can list in a resume or convey in a magazine article. Its that intangible, un-quantifiable mistique that develops around a person that, all things being equal, cares more and goes harder just because its the only way they know how to live.

For many different reasons. Some of us are honest about those reasons, and some of us are not.

Mechanical wristwatches and the human heart are the only things that beat 24/7, 365 without constant maintenance.

Interesting thread. Since I was 7, I have always worn a watch. I still have my first Timex...gold and brown (pic below). I went to metal band Seikos, then rubber Timex Ironman, then my cheesy stage in the 90s...a ceramic Rado. Then Seiko diver, to Breitling Navitimer...first mechanical watch to multiple Panerai. Finally got my SD43 for my 50th....really like Rolex. Feel naked without watch.

Brand brainwashing; ego; rewarding yourself; showing off; love of expensive foibles.

I'm guilty of all the above!

Men have limited appropriate jewelry options. For me, it’s wedding ring and a watch. From a time perspective its lunacy. Most of us have an iPhone that tells better time. But that’s not why we love them. Their is something about having a little engine on your wrist that is constantly working. When your away from home traveling it’s a little travel companion.

History, tradition and innovation.

I enjoy the craftsmanship and precision of any time keeping instrument. One of my favorites is my JLC Atmos clock

I’ve always worn a watch, always collected them be they timex—es as a kid to where I’m at today.

Enjoy the mechanics and manufacturing behind them. Honestly I enjoy Rolex for the heritage of being the best for harsh environments. This is why I’m not a fan of the new models and ended up with my 14060M.

I wish they didn’t carry the price tag they do and still catered to the adventure crowd vs the boardroom / country club.

Screw it. I’m going to have the polished areas on mine brushed to match the tops of case / band.

Wish I could get a non shiny matte dial too.

It’s like BMW’s or Porsche’s. Lots buy for the status and comfort while a few buy to push to the limits. I wear my watch through everything.

I think when you talk bang for your buck you get a lot of enjoyment and usage out of this hobby. I have owned motorcycles, classic cars, still, own a boat and dollar for dollar those things get very little use in comparison. My watch, however, is with me daily and I feel I get a whole lot of enjoyment out of it.

This right here.

I realized that I had $20k+ worth of noisy items in the safe that get used 1-2x a month at most, even then it might just be a few of em.

Why then is there an issue for the spend on something that is worn daily. The ROE (return on enjoyment) is so much higher.

This - and not ROI - is what this hobby is all about. Well said.

But also it is a costly hobby at first, but when you decide to quit te hobby it seems that the money isn't gone as much as with other hobbys wich is obviously a very very very good thing

When I was a young lad, I loved to listen to my grandfather’s pocket watch. I inherited it when he died.

I’m 75 and have worn Rolex since my late 20s. I really like the beauty of the watches. I also collect and use extremely nice tools. I drive a BMW which is engineering driven. I guess it’s a “thing” issue.

My wife collects nice purses, shoes, and jewelry. She wears a ladies President and a Patek 24.

Interessing comments , i don't have the same feeling with other jewelry or so by the way, i don't see it as a piece of jewelry personally, however i think for myself, and especially a professional watch is a sort of that cool rugged item that brings you a bit extra personality, however i am really really not convinced that most persons wearing a Rolex or AP in my country do actually LOVE a watch but use it more as a showoff for wealth
