The Power of Advertising

I was wandering around the city centre here this afternoon and noticed that our new local AD had an advertisement on the electronic advert boards in the city, resplendent with the SS GMT Master II BLRO. Having wandered into the AD about half an hour later, I was amused to overhear a conversation between a member of staff and a potential customer of said watch who was both suprised that it wasn’t in stock due to it being advertised, and shocked that he was not able to order one.

And the only thing shocking about this post is it’s waste of everyone’s time.

That was unnecessarily rude. This is an open forum, and we can all share our thoughts. Yeah, we all know there is a shortage, but anecdotal stories are part of what keep the forum going.

Anyway...OP, I do find that story amusing. I see the same thing a lot around my neck of the woods - I’m sure we all do these days. It’d probably be easier to buy the billboard itself than a BLRO!

Thanks for the support, I just wanted to report how the real world sees the situation, that it is strange that you cannot obtain something that you have the money for. Does this occur in any other business other than luxury goods?

A waste of time was your "Is Rolex just for rich people?" thread, which got deleted after 10 minutes.

Seriously, with a 20-year long waiting list for the new SS BLRO, that's what we do now while waiting: wasting each other's time

I hate those type of ads. Where you see something you want, you walk into the store that placed the ad and they do not have it. That is the type of thing that makes me take my business somewhere else.

I doubt that any ordinary customer looking for a nice watch has any idea about the current demand for SS watches.
Must be pretty tough for AD's explaining this day after day.
At least this way Rolex keeps the demand on an all time high

Not to those who have never purchased a
Rolex and want what’s advertised ???

I think it’s a sham and scam by Rolex if you ask
me. False advertising and a perfect scenario for
a law suit by someone... FWIW

Yea, at Glasgow Airport arrivals they have a complete wall, you can,t miss, that has a Rolex on it. It should come with the strap line "The new Rolex GMT Master2 fashioned from unobtainable steel"

It is quite ridiculous, think of the money saved not advertising something you can't get.

I believe you’d call it a halo model. Brings in the punters, raises the status of the other models.

I believe it is classic bait and switch. Big box stores do it all the time, not that I in anyway agree with it. Run an ad for a TV for pennies and the “sorry, just sold out, but we have this fine model over here.”

I spoke with an AD last week that figures even after weeding out the random calls from everywhere ills they have probably lost north of $200k in sales this past year or so.

That’s more like loss-leading, but I guess we can call a spade a spade.

The big winner in this is Rolex, of course. They must be operating very lean, with regards to their supply-demand ratio.

Can’t be fun for dealers to have to turn down a bunch of customers with fat wallets every single day.

That's as ridiculous as it is hilarious. Have to feel a bit sorry for the AD who is being positioned as a jerk by this kind of advertising, although a good salesperson will be able to handle it smoothly and maybe get a sale of some sort. I suppose it all adds to the myth and intrigue and is not damaging for the most part - to Rolex.
