Or old Sellers don’t pay and rely on reputation.

All this would do is close more deals but won’t necessarily guarantee anything imop. So, cover those serial numbers.

What actually gets sent is what matters and that’s all about reputation.

I have yet to purchase any watches on EBay and frankly don’t ever intend too. However reputation is the first thing I always check. That and whether they are an authorized reseller for anything where a warranty maybe required. That means regardless how many items they have sold they would have needed to sell other items of the same kind previously with good reviews. Just due dilengence if you ask me.

However when it comes to something as expensive as watches I feel more comfortable going elsewhere. Sounds like EBay has a vested interest and would like to make more us feel more comfortable using EBay. I still think I would much rather go elsewhere.

I have purchased two watches on ebay - but both were not more than I was willing to lose in case the deal went south without recourse.

Both were genuine...it's about doing your diligence.

The Autenticate program is essentially an eBay selling service that charges a 20% fee. What you do is consign the Rolex to eBay contractually.

From the existing program - I see a huge new risk added + a bigger existing risk avoided.

New Risk:
“Ship your handbag using a prepaid USPS shipping label, or drop it off at a participating FedEx office location and they'll pack and ship it for you. Shipping is free. Independent experts will authenticate, list, and sell your handbag on your behalf. You get paid when your item sells.” This is the handbag program which the watch program will follow. The risk is the loss of your watch, and the disagreements about pricing, and trusting eBay to actually pay you.

Existing Risk Avoided:
You will be insulated against scammers who claim they got an empty box, or they got a fake. And prolonged PayPal cases to take your money back.

By the way this service has existed in a different form on eBay for years. Storefronts run as a selling bazaar where you have them sell your watch. But their take is almost 40% - that is who eBay is disintermediating while trying to also clean up the fake product problem.

I have purchased a couple of watches, none more than 2k.

Had a problem with one, had to get Ebay involved to get my money back but finally did.

I would never buy a watch approaching the cost of a new Rolex on Ebay. I think my 2k limit is where I will stay for a while.
