I bought my 116619 back in 2010. I definitely prefer the 5 digit Subs/SDs overall and have this romantic idea that a Sub is a tool watch made for all life’s adventures. For this reason, the SubC SS will never be in my possession. The WG version?? A different story. The 116619 might be a tool watch for someone with more disposable income than me, but for most people that own one.....it’s an article of jewelry, and I treat it as such. Unless I win the lottery, you won’t catch me diving with this one (although I have considered taking it on a dive for a photo-op just once)

It’s not to say I don’t love this watch......because I do. I just prefer a 5 digit SS sub for the more adventuresome things in life.

Does that make more sense?? (The thread title was just supposed to be provocative)

Totally agree. The only sub I own now is the YG version, and jewelry is exactly what it is. For anything "tool-ish" I turn to my new crushes, the Tudor BB and Pelagos.

Stunning piece, Jason.

Well, the 6-digit will hold up better over a lifetime of adventure, but, to each their own.

I disagree strongly but I'm happy you own a watch you like. :)

Also going off on a tangent slightly, I do find this idea odd now that collectors covet the 4 and 5 digit subs as they're tool watches, made to be abused and didn't cost the earth...

Except now, they cost more than the modern 6 digit Submariner and a lot of people who own them lock them away in safes or under a cuff!

The idea of owning the current interpenetration of what the Submariner should be, with the hardest wearing materials and the modern advancements in movement technology; What's not to love about it.

Either way, I choose the 6 digit over the 5 for those reasons.

Wow. I can’t believe you hadn’t ever seen one in person since they’ve been around for what........10 years now?? I do have to say that it is a much better watch in person.

Thanks for the complement.

The Smurf has always been a stunner to me and on my grail list. I think I understand it may have converted you somewhat to start loving ceramic Subs. Anyways wear and enjoy your Smurf in good health. Cheers!

Yeah. I hate my Lamborgini. Darn thing is too low. Why don't they make an SUV?

They do. and he's not complaining one bit, he's stating that this piece is so nice he wouldn't want to wear it as a tool watch like they were originally intended.

Exactly. Thank you my friend

I primarily wanted to post this picture because of the lighting and dial color. It is just such a deep beautiful blue in this lighting.

I fully get Jason's point, but let's be honest: solid gold Subs were never intended as tool watches in any of their generations...

I even stopped diving with my 5 digits too. Too expensive to expose to the rudeness of this sport (out of the water) when a below-$400 Seiko works just as well...

We're all Rolex fans; but when my partner saw the Smurf she said, 'ugh, vulgar.' So there is a spread of opinions. As I wear a WG Daytona with blue dial, she probably thinks mine is vulgar too.
In truth, modern Rolexes can be a touch on the 'blingy' side. You either live with it, or you don't.

Great pics! Love that blue dial. I’m not sold on PCLs on a sub. But I could get over it I think.

What about the 6 digit sub makes it less of a tool than the 5 digit one?

Either way, I love all subs

—Ceramic is more costly and not really end-user replaceable.
—Ceramic is not end-user removable for cleaning purposes
—Lack of drilled-through lug holes. Lug pins less sturdy

—I guess they are both “tools”, but the 116610 is too expensive to repair if damaged for me.

These are the main things for me. I still dive with my 5-digits that have drilled through lug holes or my Rolex with welded bars. I realize they are all expensive, but I have a couple Rolex watches that I bought before the crazy prices. I feel more comfortable diving with these watches.
