DC Recommendations?

TRF Friends,

My wife and I are heading to DC for a short vacation later next week; in total, we will have 3 full days there (not including travel to/from).

As DC has much to offer, I would like to learn what TRF considers are “must see” sights. Any attractions you found underwhelming? Any lesser-known sights that impressed you?

Also, we’ll be staying in the Wharf district, so any recommendations for that area will be appreciated!

Thanks!

National Space and Air Museum is a must, I also suggest the Postal Museum. Have fun in DC

United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.

Reflecting pool, all of National mall really.

Watergate, while walking up to see Georgetown.

Arlington cemetery.

The White House (Obviously)

Sorry I have no idea where/what that is?

Where are you staying? Do you have a car? What do you want to see as there is far too much for only three days.

The Wharf is a brand new area of hotels/restaurants along the Potomac.

No car; we’ll be taking taxi/public transportation. Since it is our first trip to DC, probably the more prominent attractions (White House, National Mall, Aerospace Museum, Holocaust Memorial) noted in this thread.

Wharf is nice, lots of good new restaurants and shops. Check out crime and punishment museum, air and space is cool but the better one is Udvar-Hazy out near Dulles, which you would need a car or Uber to get to from downtown. You can go hit up Tiny Jewel Box near Dupont as well (don't expect to see much there you would want) and walk around Dupont Circle if the weather is nice. Check out some embassy's you might like to see, you can generally schedule tours in advance. National Cathedral, St Matthews Cathedral (JFK funeral was there), National History Museum is awesome, will try to think of some other must do's.

Ok, you are close to two metro stops but no car probably means that you stay in the city.

There are now lines/tickets for both the White House and the Capitol building, if you want to do these plan your time accordingly.

The National Mall is within walking distance. Smithsonian, Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial and the surrounding memorials. Arlington National Cemetery is across the river, Metro could get you there.

Pro: Thought the presentation at Ford's Theatre was extremely well done.
And very much enjoyed the talk they gave at the Supreme Court, inside the court itself.
Air and Space was way cool, and so was seeing the document room at the National Archives.

Con: The Library of Congress was packed with school tours (as it should be) but very loud, to the point where hearing the guide was next to impossible.

We took a guided night bus tour of the monuments that was a good way to get around and see things. Lots of stops and plenty of time to walk around. They picked up and dropped off at the hotel, too, which was nice.

The Supreme Court sessions on Tuesday & Wednesday 10/9-10 ought to be interesting...maybe line up for that.
