Question about Baby Formula in the US... :)

OK, so a bit of an odd question, I know!

We're heading for Florida this autumn. We have been countless times before, but never with a baby.

Our baby will be 5 month old at the time of our vacation, and my wife has been google'ing for hours trying to see if the Baby formula we use (or similar) is available in Florida.

We use the ready to drink ones. (Not the powder stuff)

So what we use at home is "Nestlé Nan Pro". We usually shop at Publix in Ft Lauderdale as it's a pretty good selection on most stuff. Publix is blocking my ip address from looking at their selection online (strange enough ).

Anyone on the forum who shop for this stuff on a regular basis care to share what ready to drink baby formulas are available in the US?

My wife is worried about our "Bella" getting introduced to a new "milk" and thus getting stomach pains. I'm not sure it's that big of a deal switching to something else, but try tell my wife that!

they have ready made... use that. Not sure of all the brand options though. I would pack as much as you can of your stuff though.

Powder stuff needs to be sterilized which means you have to boil it and then let it cool down which almost no one does. Liquid formula is sterile.

Yeah, we will bring some of what we use now. My wife is ready to bring 3 weeks supply. Me? -Not so much!

my wife doesnt use formula so when we move back to the states, that frozen supply is getting shipped and thats not going to be an easy feat

I assume since they are able to ship frozen foods around the world, its possible. TBH even when are kids are on solids we bring food as there is nothing worse than being somewhere away from home and not being able to find the correct stuff.

This Nestlé stuff is of course quite readily available in Europe, but that didn't stop the Missus to bring a weeks supply last month when we where in Portugal.

While using the formula has been easy for my wife, (wasn't her choice though, her own "milk factory" just didn't work due to complications) but having her "own" supply when traveling would indeed be practical.

Did you try incognito mode? Also, Amazon might be able to ship it to your hotel.

Nothing more stressful than traveling to a foreign country with a baby....just remind yourself that their are people having babies on dirt floors. Saying that, we traveled to Central America and I packed a water sanatizing bottle. My wife thought I was crazy. The last thing you want is a sick little one.

Well can't say I'm stressing about bringing Bella to Florida.

I think my wife is a bit more relaxed about the BF stuff now after this thread.

We're also visiting Guadeloupe on this trip, but shouldn't be a problem there, as it's basically France.

If someone happens to regularly shop at the Publix in the "Harbour shops" in Fort Lauderdale, I'd love to see a picture of what is available in the formula lane.

I really don't think it's a wise idea to bring 20 liters or so of baby formula in a separate bag. CBP officer might look suspicious.

Airport security makes you tase your breast milk at Heathrow... i know because i traveled with a baby with it in bottles once as my wife flew separately for some reason.

Cows milk is exponentially better and formula to my taste at least ... so by all means bring the formula. Thats easy

Try traveling solo with a bag full of children's snacks, books, diapers, etc. Your guess would be correct if you guessed that I got special treatment at the airport.

Had to meet up with the family 2 days late. Didn't help that my flight was out of the international terminal.

We used this one and worked well for ready made. Fairly ubiquitous so you should be able to find most places or order on Amazon or Google or something similar.

Enfamil Gentlease Gentle Infant Formula, Ready to Use is the name. We tried everything and this was the one that didn't cause problems with our daughter. YMMV but these are readily available in most grocery stores and drug stores. Good luck -- had the same issue when we went to Oz.

Thanks, I'm pretty sure Bella will do fine with another ready-to-feed available in the US. Checked the contents of Gerber (Owned by Nestlé nowadays) agains the Nestlé NAN PRO 1 that we use, and contents are nearly identical.

My wife just likes to panic sometimes.

Gerber good start (Nestle product) would be the like item for you. Gentle, Stage 1, orange lettering. Publix carries it as would most major stores. Comes in ready to feed bottles but if you cant find the ready made, keep in mind you can mix powder with some bottled water in your feeding bottle and it’ll be the same thing (minus some convenience).

As for your wife’s worries about new formula upsetting the baby, as long as you are using the same base (cow’s milk to cow’s milk, soy to soy, etc.) there shouldnt be an issue. Remember that when breastfeeding, the mother’s formulation changes based on her diet that day.

You are right.

She's only been getting this NAN product almost since birth as breastfeeding didn't work out, and a couple of other products really upset her. It was pretty much as flipping a light switch when we changed formula. So I get my wife's obsession and worry about this. But I really think Bella will be okay.

Keep in mind the Enfamil Gentlease is mostly used for fussiness/colic as it uses more sugars from corn vs. something like what your daughter is used to now, which is more milk based (higher up on ingredients list). Your daughter would be fine either way, but like I said, the Gerber good start, gentle, stage 1, is going to be the like item for you. Nestle Gerber also has a similar product to the Enfamil Gentlease called Good Start soothe, but again, if your daughter has done well on regular formula, there is no need to try the “sensitive” line which is more for fussiness, gas, etc. If you do feel that she is more sensitive to formula, then the Nestle Gerber good start soothe is worth a look since she has done well on Nestle. Just compare the ingredients and weight (higher the ingredient on the list, the more of it in the formulation) and pick one most comparable.

Update.

So... we’re in Florida now. We brought some milk she’s used to. Today at Publix, we bought a pack of Enfamil Neuro Pro. She refuses to drink it. :chuckles: She is Very much like her dad. I’m exactly the same if I get a bad wine. on to the next one. Who knew infants where such Connoisseures?
