Has your Rolex ever been upstaged

when you are out and about.

Was in a mall today , pretty affluent area

I always glance peoples wrists walking past - I know it’s a sickness :)

Pass a guy wearing an ss GMT ceramic ,I smile

Walk further down , I see a father in business attire , followed by what I presume was is his son late teens / early 20s , casual jeans/shirt

Something shiny catches my eye on the sons wrist , I take another look - bewm rose gold AP , gold bracelet the works , damn !

Now maybe it wasn’t the real deal , but geez it looked it the way it glimmered under the lights ;)

Wearing my OP out the other day for a drink; the older guy next to me at the bar had a yellow gold Sub. I guess the OP was outclassed. We had a nice discussion about the Sub.

That’s pretty cool that you could strike up a conversation

In my situation it would have been weird for me to go up to the kid half my age and say “ wow cool AP”

No, I just ordered my favourite Roast Pork Bahn Mi roll ( with pate and crackling ) and soon felt a lot better

Saw a guy a couple weeks ago walk past me with a 5712. My Sub was upstaged instantly but I didn’t care because Pateks aren’t my thing.

Only every month or so. I am the only modern Rolex collector among my friends, who only buy and own the rarest vintage Rolexes. In their eyes, my modern pieces are laughable and I am a fool for collecting them.

Then there's the family get together, where my in-laws are Patek and AP collectors. Sometimes they condescendingly nod at my Hulk or Batman, while they're wearing AP ROC, PP Perpertual Calendar and PP Nautilus Chrono.

I might as well be wearing a Seiko. So I started doing it. A month ago I wore my SKX and immediately felt a lot better. :p

Holy cow....

My family thinks a $100 is expensive.

And my friend with a Porsche GT3 in PTS signal green doesn't really get watches.

Either could afford a watch, they just don't see the point.

I think the build quality of modern rolexes are far better than vintage. In my view the higher price of vintage is all about the scarcity but you get a better watch if you buy a current release.

I wear my seiko most days so thus happens rather often. When I wear my sd43 not so often as in Asian suburbs many are fakes.

When this happens I just pull out my johnson and settle it on the spot. Either that or we duel.

Don’t you have a couple lambs if I recall? You’re the one upstaging cats most of the day

That is an apt scenario - especially since “glancing at his wrist” also includes everything in that line of sight...

Casting no aspersions on the OP’s mall strolling practice of checking wrists - but hope he realized that only HE knew that his gaze was just the wrist.

After all, a GMT - the object of his admiration - could easily have been misidentified as “package envy” as observed by a casual onlooker...

OMG I've been guilty of doing this a few times!!!!

Hubby even once caught me eyeing a fellow at Starbucks who was on line and wearing a very nice Daytona!!! I had to of course explain to him what I was actually ummmm " viewing " haaaaaa!!! I even called the guy over to start a conversation with him and only then my hubby realized that it was indeed his Rolex that I was " staring at "!!

Whipping it out is one thing Tom, but a swordfight is going too far, you don't know where it's been.

OP: no. I prefer the Rolex to that AP... So given the choice, I'd rather have the Rolex anyway. I'm pretty happy with what I have, even if none are six figure type pieces.

My five Rolexes are upstaged by my two PPs, which are in turn upstaged by an old FP Journe.

Doesn't mean I don't love the Rolexes, and I also love my Seiko diver.

Sat next to a guy on a plane wearing a 2 tone YMII. Had a nice conversation, however I was not wearing a watch at the time. 10 mins later I notice the air stewardess was wearing a Platona!!!! Could not believe it - not sure the kind of salary cabin crew staff are on (excuse my ignorance maybe they are extremely well paid nowadays) but I did wonder if she was maybe married to a pilot! She was clearly babying it when reaching into the trolleys etc too and boy did it stand out!

It happens to me all the time but I just put a paper bag over my head to avoid the shame.

probably a knock off, FA don t make that kind of cash..unless they are married to money..or family wealth, but if you are rich, you don't become a waitress of the sky.

i know a lot of pilots and FA that buy their watches in Beijing or shanghai..they usually cost $ 100 and last a couple of year, just saying.

Yeah ... been there.

Was complimented on my SD by an old work colleague I'd not seen in years last time home on leave ... about 6 seconds before he rolled his sleeve up to show me his pristine gold Sub.

I'm sure it made his day.

As long as it didn’t ruin yours , did he take it off and make you feel the weight , or else it doesn’t count! Haha!

I'm not easy upset if I'm honest, I did feel a slight pang of envy, but only very briefly, I'm happy for him .... he worked hard for it.

My wife was more worried about me getting the green eyed monster to the point of heading straight to the AD and handing my card over
