Would you choose one over the new BLRO if both were available but you could only have one?

I am anti PCL so I would go Explorer I Blackout. Plus, it would pair nicely with my Explorer II, so perhaps I am a bit biased.

The blackout is a proven rare model. The BLRO is the flavor of the week and demand will not remain where it is. It's already showing signs of slowing, and trust that it will be made in much larger quantities.

still a regular looking explorer to me... more or less.

Even forum guys dont know what it is... so there you go, not very "collectable" except in a really niche way and a forum about Rolex is too mainstream for it

to me its buying a watch for no other reason than its "rare". I dont even want a regular explorer and i certainly wouldn't want a rare one.

i disagree with the premise that because something is rare it is collectable. What is driving the desire to get a watch then? You liking it or the fact is some anomaly of a watch you dont really like to begin with.

For example you probably should own an explorer 1 anyway before buying a blackout one as that would show you actually like the watch and last time i checked they were not flying off AD shelves.

If I showed you 2 rocks, 1 nicer than the other and asked you to pick 1, naturally you would pick the nicer looking rock. Now if I said “hold on, the uglier looking rock is actually from the moon”...well you would pick the moon rock every time right, despite it being the uglier of the 2 rocks.

The Blackout got a lot of talk when the Mk1 214270 debuted in 2010. Some people saw the non-lumed WG numerals as a throwback to the Blackout because they looked "black" in certain lights from certain angles. Some people liked the (then) new version for that reason, but it seemed to me they were rationalizing a quirky design choice. But whatever floats their boat, I guess.

its not a bad looking watch but considering a regular explorer 1 is about the only SS professional watch you can get at an AD and at retail i find it odd that anyone would pass on that and just get the rare one because its rare. Its weird criteria to me

Agreed, the non-lumed numerals looks strangely unfinished to me
