Sell a 16610 for the FAT 116610

Gentleman,

Really I'm not looking for a 16610 vs 116610 thread.
A while back I owned a 116610. I loved the watch, it was truly my grail. I sold it for my upcoming wedding.

There is a Sub 116610 NEW for sale at retail cost. I was close to making a deal but I found a MINT 16610 for 2,500 less then the 116610.

Now here is the issue. I want that 116610 and I miss owning one.

My reasons to keep the 16610
- I'm a chronic watch flipper and this 16610 example is amazing and I believe if I sell it, I'll never find another one.
- I want a watch as a daily driver and with the 16610 being less expensive it doesn't really bother me to scratch it as it would a watch that costs $8,500
- It's closer to that sweet bond watch. Thin case and classic look. It was the watch worn in "License to Kill" (without date)
- Being that I have a problem with flipping, I really believe that the 16610 will gain in value. I bought and sold a GMT for that reason and did really well.


What do you guys think?

I tried that once with a New Nomos and I took a bath on it.
It was BAD.

I know that I shouldn't be thinking about flipping but it's in my nature so I have to prepare for the inevitable.

One more point I forgot to mention a plus and minus.
The 116610 is so perfect I believe it's a sin to put it on a strap. Some photos when people do this just make me to uncomfortable whereas the 16610 on a nato or vintage strap looks fantastic.

Are you buying a watch for an investment? If so probably a bad idea. It sounds like you really want the subc. Go for that! Wear the hell out of it.

Between the two I prefer the 16610. I agree with you on the straps too

Buy the SubC and be happy. You sold it for a wedding? Well, that won't happen again plus you are smitten by the 6 digit, another reason you probably won't sell it. I prefer the 5 digit myself, but they made tons of them, it might gain a little but It's no rare bird. That price is pretty good but It's used, minty, but previously owned. Might need service sooner than you expect

People change too. You're 'planning' on probably flipping it which is odd. Once you get it on your wrist you may never part with it. Bit of a sticky wicket as our British brothers might say.

Go for your hearts desire, if you ain't happy then you may never be satisfied.

Sell the 16610 (assuming you bought it, since you never said) and buy the 116610 since you seem to want it more. You probably don’t need two Subs and this will drill into your “flipper” brain justifying you to flip the SubC for something else, which you really don’t want to do. You should always keep a sub (or sea dweller).

You might even want to consider a ND SubC.

They are different enough to warrant having both in the collection.

If I had to pick one though, the 6-number Sub reference has a lot of features that the 5-number does not. Ceramic insert, much-clickier bezel, fat case, maxi dial and that wonderful clasp are enough for me to favor the 116610.

SubC Is better in almost evey aspect.!

The main points if you want the 16610 is if the visual speaks to you (thinner case lugs etc), Buy what you like !

Buy the 116610. That’s what you want, isn’t it? Don’t worry about the investment side of things. For me, I’ve had both, several times, and always go back to the 16610. It is the classic rolex design. I find the super case very unattractive. But that’s just me.

You have a lot of concerns of varying degrees. The only plus for the 16610 is straps.
All that other flipping and appreciation mess I don't understand. I'd flip a Nomos too, but you wouldn't flip so much if you actually liked the watch. If you get bored easily then no amount of appreciation of a watch will help, because any watch that has high value/appreciation will probably cost more at the beginning purchase anyway(unless you buy msrp ceramics and flip).

I'd own the 116610 in your shoes, it's subjectively a better watch, although I do prefer the slimmer case ever so slightly but not enough to pass over the benefits of the newer watch.

This will turn into a 5 vs 6 digit thread anyway. I say 5 - They're: Not being made anymore, look better, weigh less, are more special, don't have that weird clasp that takes up 90%+ of your under wrist and isn't really special anymore since several sub £300 'micro brands' have ripped it off. Don't have that inexplicable fat case (that takes up 90%+ your wrist), don't have those inelegant fat markers and ceramic that every sub £300 micro turd has ripped off etc etc.

In your position get the subc, it sound like your grail. For me, it’s 16610 and not close. 16610 is a pure tool, and far more balanced. The ceramic proportions appear very unbalanced and the wide lugs nothing more to appease the large watch crowd. I M willing to bet they pare the lugs down more and more. Indeed they already have with the BLRO.

Actually, I believe the 16610 was the watch in license to kill and is mentioned in several bond blogs.

I dig my five digit sub! Maybe I am the oddball but if I wanted two subs I would have a 16610 and a no date SubC. Just my two cents.
