So I had a opportunity present itself by my normal dealer to get top dollar for my day date 40. He called me because he knew I had it and I barely wore it. I almost did it but as I was getting it out of my safe and gathering box and cards I got emotional about it. Now I wasn't on my knees crying but I did get sad. I thought about how for many years this was my dream watch. It took years of hard work to get the money for my watch. I am a family man with 3 kids so everyone else comes first and I come last by my choice. I want my family to be provided for and give them all the things they want and need. So I didn't realize how emotionally attached I was to my watch. That watch represents so much more to me than jus a timepiece. I fell I could get offered double and I probably wouldn't part from it. Only way I could do so was if my family was in need. Anyone else have a watch like that in their collection ? That watch is a big piece of pride for me. I guess that is why when I wear it I carry myself different on the inside.

I have a nice, small, collection of Swiss watches. I’m not really “connected” to any of them with the exception of a very old, gold Rolex that my father gave me. He brought it home with him from Europe after serving during WW2.
I don’t think it’s particularly valuable but to me it’s beyond priceless.

The watch just represents so much pride of how hard I worked to get it. It would go in heart beat as I stated in my original post. I just would not sale it even if it meant getting way over it’s worth

You aren’t attached to your watch. You are attached to how hard you worked for it. How much of a goal it was and that you achieved it. That’s why you don’t want to sell it, and that makes sense. It could be a car, a pen, a custom made desk, expensive piece of art, it just happens to be a watch.

Good call on keeping it. Wear it more and remember more often how hard you worked for it.

Rolex's motto is a Crown for every Achievement so your sentiment is common, no need to defend it, we all like to mark milestones in our lives even if just with cake. It's just that when you've been round the watch block a few times you see the watch more for what it basically is rather than what it represents.

I get what you mean. I’m attached to my five digit Sub. It was the first nice watch I bought myself, 18 years ago. I rarely wear it now so I thought about selling it now that I have a BLNR. That thought was scraped after I took it out to wear one last time. I don’t think I’ll ever part with it. Likely pass it to the kids.

BLNR - was purchased for when I commissioned as an LT in the Army, worn during the birth of my first daughter.

SubC - worn during the birth of my second daughter

Tudor Sub - gift from the wife for our anniversary.

Many others have stories as well...

But if it ever came down to it food on the table before sentiment.

My boy is also 3.

He’s trashed my SubC in the local swimming baths which hopefully RSC will be able to put right come service time and he dropped my/his DJ from his high chair on to a stone floor putting a huge dent in the crown.

I think we can all assume that our family and loved ones come before our possessions.

That being said I get where the OP is coming from. I get a lot of enjoyment out of my watches and it’s natural to form an emotional attachment to them. Especially when they may represent important milestones etc.

Watches, it’s just for fun. Recently gave my first watch away as wasn’t wearing it enough.

Hold on tightly. Let go lightly.


And OP - don’t stress about the thread, everyone has their own views on things. It’s what makes the forum fun and interesting. It sounds like you have your priorities set right, so unless you really need to sell, no reason why you wouldn’t feel reluctance to.
