Daily beater, Datejust 41 or Explorer I?

I am making a decision for a daily (almost) beater. Currently looking at a 126300 or a 214720. An AD is able to give me $6600 and $5750 respectively. I like the explorer I but the 126300 has the new movement which I think it’s a big jump. Any suggestion?

I'd go with the 214270.

I have the new 126300. Honestly, I think the Explorer would be a better beater.

How do you think explorer is better as a daily beater?

Buy the watch you like. Otherwise, you run the risk of looking down at your Date-Just and thinking how you wish it was an Explorer.

The main tangible benefit to Caliber 3235 is the longer power reserve, but if this watch is going to be used daily except for occasional, brief breaks while something fancier is on your wrist, then the two-day power reserve in Caliber 3132 that powers the Explorer should be perfectly suitable. Caliber 3132 is no slouch: it uses the in house Paraflex shock absorption system that is not used in Calibers 3130 or 3135.

Either will do so pick whichever you feel the better connection with. Ultimately it is a Rolex so it will take the daily grind just fine. With that being said, IMO the less complications (i.e. lack of date) and no cyclops would probably do better in the long run if you are really rugged with the watch.

Sorry for stupid question, but what do you mean under “a daily beater”, the watch that you are going to wear for usual daily occasions or the one for some heavy duty work?

If for the first, I would definitely go with DJ, otherwise - Explorer.

Between those two I prefer the Explorer. Sometimes less is more

The explorer is a great companion.. rugged with stunning looks and an impeccable reputation. Stoic and can fly under the radar when needed yet have fellow WIS weak at the knees with that iconic dial.
OK... I may be a tad bias...

I’ve started to dislike the term “beater”. It’s a watch, and they are all meant to be worn daily. Pick the one you like...not sure how one would be better than the other for the task of daily wear.

I rather agree. Every watch is meant to be worn. My problem is I want to wear my nicest watch most of the time. Thus it’s my daily. My beater is the watch I don’t mind getting dirty or wear while doing something that might whack it.

DJ is a perfect daily. Explorer is more of a beater.

I prefer the Explorer as a daily watch over the DJ41. I like the looks and perceived ruggedness of the watch. The DJ41 has a newer movement and I think sometimes people get hung up on movements when for me it is about the watches appearance and wear. Any modern Rolex movement will serve you well.

Do you need a date function? If not then Explorer gets my vote.

I'll add that a longer power reserve doesn't matter to me

Explorer I is my choice for a daily beater. However btwn Exp I and DJ41, I can see how itll be a tough choice. Even if polled, I see it split 50/50

To me, it will be DJ41 with rhodium/black dial, domed bezel and oyster bracelet. The only thing I consider a deal breaker in this combination is the oyster bracelet on DJ41. It comes with PCL. May not work for a daily if you don’t like PCL.

I think it boils down to whether you want/need the date or not. I do, so I would go DJ.

I picked up an exp1 214720 last weekend, kind of an impuls buy but i was offered a heavy discount so i took it. I always liked the classic exp but felt it did not realy have a place in my collection.

Its growing on me. Less is sometimes more. Its super comfortable, great size and works with everything so perfect for a daily. Never liked the DJ 41. To big for a dressy watch for my taste.

For me it would depend in what your daily grind is because the DJ has polished center links (assuming oyster) but jubilee is even more dressy. The DJ41 stands out and very shiny. The Explorer will be more low key with the brushed bracelet and matte dial.
If you’re in a non rugged environment most of the day then DJ would be fine as long as you don’t want the attention it will bring. It really pops off thw wriste. More rugged environment or you want to keep the looks down go Exp

For something daily I'd need a date.
