The use of "rubis" on a Rolex

Came accross an interesting listing. As I am learning on this site, there are indication that the use of the term "rubis" (mispelled) on Tudors is an indication of the watch being counterfeit. In browsing Ebay, I found the listing below.

Comments, expertise on this one?!

...interesting thread...

...to me, I THINK, I say THINK, that this might possibly be a FAULKER. Just like so many of the Tudor 9050 Rangers and Sub's with the misspelled RUBIS movements.

...HOWEVER, I am subject to GENTLE persuasion and a knowledgeable reply to the contrary.

...it is obviously so old that the nickle plating is wearing off, but I have seen that on the referenced Tudors also.

...you REALLY want me to pull out my vintage precisions and check them don't you...

Stan.

Rubis was a nuclear submarine from French Navy.

Do you think that is what there referring to in the movement?

Now that I think about it..the above sounds ridiculous!

Hi,

I cannot speak for the subject watch (which looks fine to me...even tho I am always suspect of early rolexes with only engraving on the wheels, esp Rebberg half hunter movements that rolex used) (as they are easy to fake), but the word RUBIS WAS INDEED USED on older genuine rolexes.

Who decided that if this word was used, that the watch was fake? 2124sling

Please do not give Lady Gaspar this misinformation.

You're seriously saying a misspelling like that could be genuine? Care to show one?

Only have 12 tix for the Carmen Electra Party and 12 for the Costner party. But if they are not spoken for by next weekend (surprisingly, some of my employee's do not stay up that late and have passed) you might be in. (hey...it could happen...)

:)

I will dig thought some old parts movements and find some. Surly you realize that many Swiss made movements use the French spelling for rubys on them don't you?

http://cgi.ebay.ph/VINTAGE-RARE-GENU...3A1|240%3A1318 This movement is one of the higher quality vintage 10½ Hunters, marked "Superbalance" on the winding wheel and "Swiss made" on the main plate and 17 rubis.

There is a similar one shown on page 68 of our book. here is another one found in just a few minutes of looking. http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/d...g?t=1218669667

Interestingly, most of the watches I see marked this way are for the Canadian market.

back to the subject watch. it is a royalite. Also made for the Canadian market. Other than being beat up and having what "appears" to be a redone dial, it looks aok.
