New SS Submariner 2010?

Hi All,

I am new to Rolex Forums and would like to call on your intelligent opinions...

I am not a collector and only possess 2 watches, Tag Heuer F1 and Breitling Colt Automatic II.

I am currently saving for a Rolex and given my age (23) I really like the look of the Sub. However I tried one on and also an Omega Seamaster, just for comparison. I actually preferred the Seamaster when I left the AD (probably because of the massive price difference!) but something inside me still wants the Rolex. Has anybody else had this thought?

The bracelet and clasp on the Sub was really flimsy and although it was suitable for its use, given the cost I believe it is not in line with the rest of the watch.

I understand a new stainless steel submariner will be out in 2010, which will have a much improved bracelet and clasp, can anyone confirm this?

I can understand your thoughts on the old style Oyster clasp, but I actually like it personally.
The 2010 New Steel Sub is what is expected rather than a guaranteed happening.
Rolex usually do things in cycles, where yellow gold comes first 2 tone second and Steel last.
If the usual cycle runs on the ceramic bezel sub it will be 2 tone this year and steel next, but only Rolex know to date.

As things go, it is likely that an SS Sub will be launched at Basel in 2010, but it might be some time after that date that you'll be able to get one. It usually takes ~6 months for them to filter into dealerships, and on a watch like a Sub, the waiting lists are likely to be long.

As far as watches go, the Seamaster is a very impressive piece of kit, and, in my view, one of the best value luxury divers on the market. It is a very solid watch, and has a
very well constructed bracelet. On the other hand, the current Sub is a design classic, and, as many members on these boards will say, it is THE essential Rolex. It'll probably be one of the last classic Rolex tool watches, and it'll look after you, even if you don't look after it.

If you were desperate for the redesigned Sub, you could always invest in a current Sub, and part exchange it in the future. Rolex sport watches always hold their value very well, and could be a wise way of getting a fantastic watch for the present time, and upgrading in the future.

Then why are a lot of ADs saying they are out and can't order any more. Seems odd that the best seller is "sold out" and the new replacement won't be available for 6 plus months. Sounds stupid to have an empty spot for 6 months.

I agree, although I believe it is a phenomenon unique to the US - in the UK, there is no shortage of supply yet. But the usual turn around time on new models mean they don't hit shops until August at the earliest, certainly if we take the past two years as an example

Just get the older version seadweller since it is better than the sub and rarer.

The redesigned Sub will most likely have a redesigned price as well, I own both a sub and an SMP, my seamaster is more of an everyday wearer, I love them both and wouldn't trade either in for an updated model. I may end up buying an updated sub but I won't be parting with what I already own, JMHO

My first watch was an Omega Seamaster, which I still love. I bought my first Rolex only about 1 month ago. I would get the Rolex though, if you want to spend the extra money. You can pickup a 2nd hand Omega for a very good price these days.

and dont forget the price will go up when its out over the current model due to added costs of the bezel and clasp.

Many thanks for your comments. I guess it could be close to a couple of years wait before we see the new model. Sorry to change the topic but what do people feel are the key differences between the sub and seamaster? I am struggling to justify the difference in price point.

Also what are your opinions on the sub LV, it is not as limited as I first thought!

as i understand, omega and rolex and from different category. rolex maintains its watches to be classic rather than being new designs.

regarding the LV, just think about if next year, if it will be discontinued, how much will be be the value of it? I still remember when the pepsi was discontinued, the value of the watch almost doubled. I think that LV will be a good investment.

The Pepsi doubled? MSRP was what a bit over $5,000 US. Are you saying they went for $10,000? I have seen a few Mint/ BNIB ones now for $5000.

I felt the same as you ansharma, after looking at Rolex and Omegas, I decided to get the Sea Master Pro it was bigger heavier, better clasp etc But there was something that kept niggling, I wasn't happy, I needed the Submariner. After getting the Sub and comparing the two I still never understood what it was..perhaps it was the white gold hour markers that made the dial stand out I don't know but I just preferred the Submariner. Then I saw the LV! And I was the same again, I wasn't happy with the submariner I preferred the look of the LV, the maxi dial and the divers extension clips in and fits better than the non date Sub, it was heavier and looked bigger overall. For me it is my perfect watch.

Have you considered TUDOR? ROLEX makes them in the same factories as ROLEX using modified ETA movements and 316L steel instead of the 904 alloy found on ROLEX.

Most continental European ROLEX ADs should carry them.

Look at the HYDRO 1200, HYDRONAUT II. GRANTOUR series is also nice.

So hop the chunnel and pay a visit to an AD there. And they are a lot more affordable.

This will change the watch completely, the image of the SS SUB watch wearer, i.e. change the "type" of person who wears the watch. Less adventurer/diver/youger, more overweight, rich, middle aged guy with a ferrari and a 20 year old GF (who only is there cause of the money and laughs at the older guy behind his back while secretly meeting her 25 year old lover).

PCL will destroy the watch and even make people go to the Tudor divers, or Bremont divers or IWC's. Because it would no longer be THE divers of divers watches and will no longer be the watch that looks like THE diver's watch, but a watch for someone who never steps foot in the ocean.

I know Rolex is getting a bit garish now and a little vulgar with their design but that would be the last straw for me.

PCL would be a disgrace, a travesty and I would never, EVER purchase a SS sub again.

Hey just talked to my friend a Rolex dealer looks that the new sub will be avalible in aug retail $7000 I have had a submariner on my wrist for 10 years never any problems..Dont sell your self short with the omega you wont be happy...good luck on your purchase

All the newly designed Rolexes are displaying quality worthy of their price tags; I'm always impressed by the craftsmanship of the new bracelets and cases. Many of us, however, like the older designs because we've pined over them for years. Since you've brought us the issue of craftsmanship, I bet you'd be very pleased with the new Subbie.

Yeah...that desire for the Rolex is unlikely to be quenched by the purchase of an Omega. However, the new is likely to be close to $8K retail by the time it hits stores this fall.

You can get a Seamaster for $2K. Yowsers.

I know this is a Rolex forum, but having went to buy a Rolex and having walked out with a Seamaster--I feel confident that you will not regret it. The Seamaster is incredibly attractive and is of first rate quality....the Rolex may be pricier, but I think you would be hard pressed to declare it to be better.

I agree totally, the Omega is sleeker in design and probably better finished. But a Rolex is a Rolex is a Rolex, and which will give you the better return on your investment in 20 years? Rolex undoubtedly, and yes you will probably have to wait that long to make a profit. I sold a S/S and Gold Sub after 10 years in 2002 and lost money. Oh how I wish I had just kept it in a safe now, but where I live I was lucky to have got something for it, because the following month I was drugged and robbed of my wallet plus the Seiko I was wearing, could have been the Sub. Mind you, everyone here thinks every Rolex they see is a cheap copy anyway, so now I know how to protect myself better, it is probably safe to get another one. I fancy the new Sub with the Guidelock but the extra cost probably won't justify it. Opinions anyone?

Have a Sea Master pro and a sub. Bought the Sea Master first. Probably don't need both ie should have bitten the bullett and gone for sub straight away.

I have the no date sub with the older style bracelet. After I got over my initially unfavourable impression of the sub bracelet I am now more than happy with the quality of the bracelet.

Differences between Seamaster and sub on paper aint that great. What I don't miss is the, to me useless, He escape valve on the Seamaster-it's just another screw fitting to check is tight before you go in the water.

I believe Rolex doesn't want the old model competing with the new ceramic ones in the same case. They want to start on a clean slate. Also, if they have to retool the manufacturing line production needs to stop for a while. They probably decided not to stockpile inventory either and focus attention on the new product.

It doesn't sound like you are quite ready to make a decision but if you can afford it I recommend buying the Rolex sub now and enjoy it. I think it's worth the extra expense.

i have the sea master pro as well as a sub no date. bracelet clasp is much more "solid" on the sea master.. no doubt. but if i bought my sub first. and if i had to do it again, i would purchase the sub first. save the money, get the rolex. then come back for a sea master pro or planet ocean from omega. enjoy!

I'm new to Rolex, so my opinion may not count for much, but I think the new sub is sexy. Particularly the new black faced SS/18k.

I have both watches.. I must say I prefer the Sub, not because it is a fancier and more expensive watch, but because of the quality. You can feel the difference in quality..

I'd go brand new Sub and get a decent pre-loved Seamaster....
