Look at the reference number of your watch, and then count the digits. Make sense?

But I prefer the newer post 2000-> 5-digits over the older ones because I love the white gold surroundings and I've never been a fan of those tritium markers that get yellow. Just a personal preference. That being said, your 4-digits are amazing.

Yes... white gold surroundings with luminova / super luminova. That's my favorite era.

Gotcha. Thanks. Some people dont like the ceramic bezel, so I guess they would have to hunt for a used model 5 digit, right?

Not much of a hunt, as there are plenty out there. Can't go wrong with 4, 5, or 6. If I were interested in purchasing a used/vintage Rolex Submariner or Submariner Date, I'd get a 4 digit reference, for sure.

Thank you for the picture, JP. Very helpful in discerning the fine points of the size difference.

Trouble I find when looking is trying to find a 5 digit in good condition (with nice shoulders and tight bracelet), because they are getting on a bit now! There are many tired looking watches for sale for top money.

My buddies sub that got stolen at a very high end hotel in south beach looked like the one in the pic above with the orange submariner lettering. Could have sworn his second hand was orange as well. maybe it was just the lettering. He swears to this day he would never get one with the ceramic bezel.
I remember his wife bought it for him for his 40th bday 18 years ago. She paid $4000 for it with a discount. It killed her because she is a VP for Movado. |
