Broken Rolex

This is my first Rolex I bought used in 1989 and the crown came off and unable to screw onto the case. I believe it'a a late '60s early '70s model I have no idea, I have no use for it and was wondering what I could ask for it to sell it. It still works but there is no way to set the time, it just sits in my safe and I'm sure it can be repaired and make someone a nice first Rolex.

Have it serviced at a Rolex Service Center. It’ll come back in near mint condition with a warranty. If you decide to sell it, it will only add to it’s value. You must have enjoyed it once when you got it, maybe you’ll enjoy it again.

there is a retaining spring that needs to be partially depressed to re-insert the crown. Need to take the caseback off in order to do it. I would look into hiring a watchmaker to do it for you. Shouldnt run a lot. Or you can send through rolex for a full service if you want it to be really nice.

Rolex will not touch it because of the age of the watch.

I've seen older come back like new. The crown isn't supposed to just pop back in so everything seems normal. If it's otherwise running reasonably well and the crown stem isn't all chewed up then nothing needs to be replaced anyhoo. There are lots of watchmakers who could pop it back in a jiffy. Quick buff on the bezel and plexi and it would look very nice!

Who said they don't have parts. Older watches get serviced all the time. I was able to get my '72 DD serviced and it ran great.

Why is that? If it still runs but won't set I'd be tempted to just give it a shake at one of the two times a day it is right.

I believe Rolex should service all their watches no matter how old. Doesn't seem like a big deal where they can charge accordingly for parts creation on extremely old movements.

Its case by case bases on what they service. They will turn watches down for a fact.

Its completely false that rolex will not service older watches. On the contrary, they are very accommodating and want to see their legacy watches in pristine condition and out in the public eye.

Broken Rolex

Yours looks like a reference 6565 or its successor...

Can you check the serial number located at the 6 o'clock side of the case between the lugs. You will need to remove the strap to view the number.

Don’t need the entire number, the first 3 digits would help peg the year(s) of manufacture.

If you don’t know the reference number it can be found on the 12 o’clock side of the case.

I am certain it can be fixed - if not by RSC, then by the trusted vintage specialist watchmakers you’ll find mentioned on TRF. Spend some time in the vintage threads searching on your reference number and you’ll get some good info methinks.

Thank you 77 for the info, RSC said it was a 6564 but I thought for sure it was a 6565 as you said.

I saw you already were turned down by NY RSC - that is a disappointment I’m sure.

The value of a 6564 in working condition is around $2500. So it is worth fixing methinks.

Perhaps contact Bob Ridley to see what parts he has to overhaul it? http://www.watchmakers.com/www/servicesRolex.html

The RSC should be sending you a report of what was needed for the fee they charged.

77, I am wondering if maybe RSC Dallas would have parts? Do you think maybe the different service centers may have different stock? I would really like the watch to be serviced by Rolex but the woman that called me even said that Geneva wouldn't have the parts for a Rolex that old. I would think that what they charge for servicing that they can feasibly make the parts in-house Because many of us would pay the price even tho it would not be financially circumspect.

Get it serviced by Rolex. Selling it in it's current state is a huge gamble. Buying it in it's current state would also be a huge gamble.

There are also watchmakers here on the forum that will service your watch. You may also have one locally. Either way, there is a way to get the watch serviced.

I don’t believe Dallas would have the parts either. All vintage work has been shifted to Lititz Technicum and I’m sure NY would have called them to see if the parts were in inventory. You and I can’t send the watch there - only RSCs can do so.

Therefore, you’re down to independents who specialize in vintage Rolex. I believe all the parts you’ll need are somewhere in US - but the problem is they are prolly scattered all around in the parts bins of watchmakers. In other words, no single watchmaker may have everything on hand.

In addition to Bob Ridley, you can check TRF member’s vintage watchmaker recommendations in the vintage section

But plan to be very patient. I worked with my watchmaker to revive a 50 year old Omega and I did a good deal of parts sourcing myself. It took almost 2 years. But it was a family heirloom from my Dad that I wanted my brother to have in restored working order.
