Going from one Rolex to 2?

I was gifted a Rolex date just from my father over Christmas. It’s an absolute stunning piece with a ton of value since my dad wore it.

I had been looking for a Rolex before I was gifted the Rolex from my dad. I had originally looked at the Hulk or Bluesy with gold and silver band.

My question, how did you guys go about getting a 2nd Rolex. I feel like I would feel bad not being able to wear both. Is it a simple rotation? Wear the hulk/bluesey on special occasion?

Just looking for some advice. Or is the best to advice to truly enjoy the Rolex my dad got for me and hold off on the new purchase.

Was in a similar situation as you in that I was given my first Rolex from my father...a gold DD36 bark finish that was his daily wear for 30 years until he retired and stopped wearing a watch. It shows the wear and tear-bracelet has a ton of stretch and the clasp doesn’t hold like it did when new but still holds up.

Unlike my father though, I don’t work in an office nor do I wear business attire at my work, so I always felt that the watch was a bit out of place and since I’d like it to last to be able to pass it to my son in another 30 years, I prefer to have a different daily wear for my purposes. Then there’s the aspect of earning my own and having the ownership that comes from that.

That lead me to look at a used 40mm gmt ii, but ended up going with a 40mm exp ii which I then traded for the 36 exp. I love the exp but will probably work towards the gmt since that’s what I really wanted to begin with.

I don’t use a winder, so I tend to rotate 2-3 days with the exp then a day w the DD to keep both running on a regular basis and to keep some “specialness” when I wear the DD.

Enjoy what your dad gave you for a while and see how that works for you first. There's nothing wrong with owning only one watch. I'd venture to say that it makes for a better overall experience since every memory you make is with the same watch — and in this case, your father's former watch.

Congrats on the DJ. Enjoy it in good health!

You wear the Rolex that suits your mood or fits the occasion. Simple.

This. As soon as I get out of the shower, I know what I’m wearing that day. Kind of like having a sixth sense

Welcome to the forum

Many of us here have more than one watch. I just wear them in rotation and for whatever I feel for that day There’s no right or wrong but owning more than one is the “norm” here

I don't understand the problem here!? Wear one on each wrist!

Seriously though......Welcome to the forum and congrats on your DJ. It's even more special since it belonged to your Dad!

I also say, try wearing your DJ for awhile and see how you enjoy it. If you still feel the urge for another Rolex, I'd say go for it. Pick the model that "sings" to you most and the one that makes you feel good. As far as swapping off between the two, I'm sure you'll figure that out naturally and on your own. This is what the passion of watches is all about. I'm glad to hear that another one has caught this fun "addiction"!

I understand your dilemma. I currently own one Rolex. I love it. I’ve tried owning more than one but I typically just wore the one I liked the most all the time and the others sat in the safe. So nothing wrong with owning just one.

That said, you didn’t pick the DJ and maybe it doesn’t push the right buttons for you. So get yourself the reference you can’t live without and keep the DJ either in rotation or for when you visit Dad.

there's 365 days a year....i'm sure you can somehow work both into rotation.

no one is going to keep track of when and how much you wear each watch

People who have multiple rolexes all the same just different dial colours seems a waste to me id rather than other brands. I have one rolex hope to add another over next 12-18 months then that will be it.

Don’t you currently have a Sub? And wanting to add a Sub LV?

Two watches number wise is perfectly fine, and you are a nice son if your concern is your father's feeling.

Going from one to two is a slippery slope. Don't go down the slope unless you're sure of what you want. My two cents.

I agree with Larry. But I also understand your feeling. Having 2 is in a way perfect as you can rotate them once in a while. Also when one goes in for service you’ll have the other to put on. But as some have already said, you might end up getting more than 2 very soon. Whatever the case may be welcome to the club and a big congrats on getting a very rare and hard to get piece, the one that has been on your old mans wrist for a long time. I’m sure you’ll appreciate it very much.

I look for purpose chosen Rolex. One for daily wear, one for rough and/or water wear, and one for travel wear. Three different Rolex with three different purposes. I ended up with a Modern PM, a six digit diver, and a five digit GMT complicated watch which flies under the radar as well. Knowing what the watch is wanted for makes choosing easier.

You ask youself as it would be only the second one. After that you won’t be asking yourself such like questions. You better find a reputable excuse why do you need a second one. And then a third one and a fourth one and so on.

Thanks for all the great advice. I want to enjoy this watch as much as I can so I’m probably 6-12 months away. The bluesey speaks to me more than the hulk. So that would be the target for the next watch.

I appreciate the advice thus far and couldn’t be more excited about finding this board!

Alternate the two from day to day and you can wear both without have to wind or set either one.

I'd suggest a Sub or other professional model as a great second watch. They will wear very different.

Also if the DJ is SS or SS/WG fluted. Then you may consider the TT sub.

But if the DJ is TT, then an all SS Sports Rolex seems like a no-brainer great choice.

Its like clothes. Extreme dress = tuxedo, Dress = suit, relaxed = casual, activity = sports. Your rolex should slot into the category of how you’re feeling and, how you’re dressed. Of course, we’ve all seen the rolex solid gold president on the guy wearing flowered bermuda shorts...

Hard not to suggest getting on board with one of many SS sports models. Try to visit the ADs in your area and try on (if they have any) different models to see what fits your style. There are also some very nice DJ41s in SS that can pull double duty as dress and sport. Be patient and Happy Choosing....

It would really need to be a special watch for me to go down to one. It took me some time to get down to two. For me, it's the perfect number. I don't stress out trying to figure out which one to wear, I don't feel bad because both watches get wrist time, and it gives me just the right amount of flexibility.

If your Dad's watch works for every ocassion for you, I'd stick to that one.

Getting a second will lead to a third, then a fourth and pretty soon, you'll be chasing the next piece instead of enjoying the ones you have.

At least that what happened to me, at one point I had more that I could rotate and enjoy, have since pared it down to three and thinking about going down to two (dress and sport).

I have two. A Sub 16800 that I've owned for over 30 yrs. and a life long business partner friend gave me his DJ SS36. It is a great combination because of the difference in size, dial color, bracelet, bezel etc. Obviously, the sentimental value of your DJ is immeasurable, so maybe for the time being, enjoy your Dad's watch, he certainly will enjoy seeing you wearing it, and keep your eye out for a great score on a pre-owned ss or tt Sub.
