Gifted Rolex Thread

So this thread is for stories and pictures of a Rolex that has been gifted to you, not one you went out and bought yourself. Maybe it was your fathers watch, maybe your brother gave it to you for your wedding, maybe your job got you a Rolex for 50 years of service to the company, whatever the story is share it here!

Even though nobody gifted me anything, I had to get it myself, this is a nice thread to read through.

I was gifted a Patek that I traded for a Rolex GMT II. Does that count?

Gifted Rolex Thread

The timing of this thread is eerie. I’ve been promised this time piece but have yet to collect it. It’s a long story that started when I was 8 years old. I’m now 47. As soon as I have the watch, I’ll let you all know the story. I’m actually happy that I don’t have this watch yet because that means my friend is still living. But things are happening fast and I suspect I will be getting this watch sometime this month. Stay tuned...

If you look closely, you see my friend wearing this very watch in 1976.

Gorgeous 5512. Ten times out of ten I’d rather have a friend than a watch, though. Best of luck to you both.

My late father gifted/left me his Sub. I remember the day he bought it and how proud he was of the work it took. I loved knowing that I had something he cherished. Wearing it was a wonderful reminder of him and times spent together. I had planned to gift it to my son when I passed. Unfortunately a thief decided to gift it to themselves.

Gifted Rolex Thread

My father enlisted in the US Navy in 1958 and after boot camp was sent to dive school. He was then sent to school to be a Disbursing Clerk (DK rate).

Before deploying on his ship, an Oiler, he bought a Rolex Submariner from the PX. This would have been 1959, so likely a 5508 or 5512.

He wore that watch diving off his ship in rescuing men overboard and while assigned to shore duty off Guam.

He was honorably discharged in 1962 and returned to Michigan where he married my mother who had me soon thereafter.

I don’t know how the Sub found its way to our junk drawer, but as I kid I remember seeing it in there bouncing around with staplers, scissors and various other things that shifted and clanged around every time we went into that drawer looking for something. Cringe to think of it now, but it had apparently fallen into disrepair and my dad never took it to be fixed.

Fast forward to 1985. My mom and dad had divorced and moved on with separate lives. I was graduating from the US Naval Academy, so my dad asked me what I wanted for a graduation gift. I said I only wanted his Rolex dive watch regardless of condition. My heart sunk when he responded with, “That old thing? I threw that out when we got divorced. It had never been serviced and wasn’t working. Someone told me it would cost over $200 to fix it, so I tossed it.”

(Head exploding)

So, I almost got my dad’s Navy service used Submariner, but instead it is sitting deep in some trash pile, maybe with something built over it by now.

It would have looked like one of the below subs (I don’t own either of them). If only ....

My dad gifted me his 2001 16613LB. He’ll likely (hopefully)be around for quite a while. He wanted each of his sons to have one of his Rolex to enjoy while he was still here.

I was given two Rolexes both of which were my choices and both of which were traded in on watches that worked better for me. They were my SubC and DJII. Both are gone and I way prefer my current line up.
