BMW X5 - Reliability Issues?
I’m looking at buying the new 2019 X5 which consumer reports rates as one of the top SUV’s they’ve ever tested by BMW and in general. As an avid follower of their reliability ratings and my own experience of owning two 328’s, anyone have major issues owning previous X5’s? My 328’s had average reliability which is in line with CR ratings but nothing like the high reliability of my current Lexus RX350.
I’d be interested in hearing owners thoughts on this one. |

I should clarify the CR ratings for the 2019 model are “predicted” as being average. Prior X5’s reliability ratings have been all over the place. |

How long do you plan to keep it?
I just checked one out the other day, seems really nice. I’ve had two in the past and relatively trouble free. One had an issue with the vanos which was annoying.

My last Accord was my first brand new car and my 4th or 5th Honda/Acrua. Let's see, brakes replaced at 28k miles and my transmission died, in the middle of a highway going 70mph (fortunately 5k miles before the warranty died). Honda = boring as sh!t and never again. I have a 2010 328i w/115k miles and a 2016 M3 with 38k miles. Both are superior to any Honda, Acura, or Volvo that I have owned. For family reasons I may have to SUV/SAV it next, so likely either the X5 or the Porsche Cayenne. I will keep one of my 2 BMWs and probably go lightly used Diesel with either the BMW or Porsche. I beat my cars pretty hard and they can take it better than anything else I have owned, and it's not even close. I have had almost no expensive out of warranty out of my 2010 328i and it has the last non-turbo engine that BMW has put into a car. That baby is smooth and sexy, where the M3 is just all out beast. No Honda will ever be either. |

My last X5 had all sorts of oil burning issues. Known issue.
I had to keep two quarts in the car at all times. I hated that about it.

Since you mentioned that you expect to keep the car long term I thought I’d chime in on mine. I have a 2003 X5 with 104,000 miles on it. Owned it since new.
As Seth said about his, it burns oil. Not a lot, but consistently. Admittedly, mine is old, but I average about $2k/year in repairs. The last one was a new a/c compressor for well over that $2k average. At the end of the day my X has been a pretty good vehicle but I’ve also babied it the last 8 years or so. It only gets driven about 3,000 miles annually these days, maybe less. Old, out of warranty BMW’s are not for the faint of heart. New, they are a pleasure to drive. |

Currently driving a 15 going in at lease end soon. Never a problem.
Before that had a 2012 for 4 years. Never a problem. Been bulletproof last 8 years with only regular service which is included. Will probably be getting the 19 this summer when this one goes back. Drove everything else in the same space and always go back. Cayenne is close but more expensive and Porsche lease rates are not as user friendly. M sport plus power pack gives you over 350hp which is plenty and comfort and handling can’t be beat in the price point. So yah. Am a fan. |

The 1st 3 years were covered by warranty and, as best I can recall, there were very few issues. The $2k/year average started about 6 or 7 years ago. BMW’s cost a lot to repair. My vehicle is old and old things break. But, with all that said, it’s still been a reliable vehicle. It’s never left me stranded. I may have been hot when the a/c failed, but I still got to where I was going. I also own 2 MB’s at the moment, one a 2004, and I’ve found them to be better vehicles, overall, compared to the BMW. |

That $2K figure is about right for the Bimmers if owning out of warranty. IMO, the Bimmers are not the reliability king like Lexus, but few can come close to Lexus in that regard any way. Aside from that, they are not necessarily more prone to issues than others, but they do cost a lot more to get serviced whenever they have issue. |

Brother in law had a 15’ 5.0 for 60k/36months no issues. That’s all I got though.
Should be able to get a pretty good warranty, I assume, though

A good advice, stay away from V-8 X5. Buy the V-6 engine or a Diesel engine.

The 4 cal are again push trying to max out torque and HP. The in line 6’s are more balanced and have better power than a 4 cyl without redlining.

2002 X5 3.0i
2005 X5 3.0i 2008 X5 3.5i 2012 X5 3.5i 2018 GLS450 ( because I needed a change and it’s bigger) I loved all the X5s and had zero issues. The MB is fantastic but a different sled entirely |

I’ve had a 7, 12 and 2015, all have been trouble free...
That being said, I doubt I would keep any new BMW past the warranty.

I had a 4.4 and had issues with the adjustable air suspensions. Also I didn’t think the seats were comfortable. I used to be a huge BMW fan, I have own 4 over my life, but over the years I found the quality has gone down and so is their customer service, they really used to stand by their product...not anymore. Want a German SUV, try a Cayenne S of GTS, a bit more expensive but so much better and so much more fun.

Same as a Porsche or MB with reliability so don’t let that change your decision.
Lexus/Honda/etc are diff vehicles with different characteristics. They are all machines and as such there are always a few bad apples no matter how much due dillegence you do. Good luck

Had a 2014 Diesel X5 for three years, loved it, only problem was the diesel tank pressure thingy had to be changed out(covered under warranty). Otherwise it was bombproof. Looking forward to possibly trading my M3 for the new X5M.

We have one that's been great. Relatively issue free- but I have no intention keeping past the lease.

I have a 2013 X5 that I love. I am sitting at 67k miles currently. My CPO is ending in September. Honestly this car is one of my favorites. I just had 2 repairs done at the dealer last week (covered under warranty) for both an oil leak and a/c fan motor. This would have been $2k without the warranty. Prior to this I had some other issue with an intake pipe or something (don't really remember but it would have been $800 but covered under warranty). Regardless, almost $3k worth of repairs in the last couple months is making me think to replace it at the end of the year. I love X5s and may roll the dice a bit longer on mine but I would probably purchase a Porsche Cayenne if I were you.
