Help - Dad to Be, What to do with Rolex?

Greetings, old friends. It’s been quite some time since I’ve been active on these forums. 2014-15 I was here every day. Then life got busy, secondment in Europe, new job, new house, got married and now found out we’ve got our first little one on the way! As a new parent to be, I am euphoric.

Anyways, how this relates to a bunch of Rolex lovers is this: a few years ago, I found something I had been after for a while ... a NIB, 14060M Random Serial. I was in the middle of a move, so I put it into storage and then in a bank safe and I almost completely forgot I had it until recently. I have a K Serial 16610 Sub Date that’s my daily wearer; I love the slim profile and lug holes, I’ve beaten it to hell, and its been on my wrist through these halcyon days. I will never get rid of it.

Question: What should I do with the 14060m Random serial? All the stickers and tags are still on there, and I’ve been told the thing has become a bit of a collectible. If I sell, I’m thinking I can put a nice little deposit into a 529.

Hold, sell, or wear?! Re-reading the forums has brought back that itch ...

If you don’t plan to wear it, just sell it.

Hold it. These 5 digit references are only going up. In 10 or 15 years who knows what a NIB example will be worth. My guess is a lot!

Well, what’s going to get you to your goal in the future in terms of future value? 14060M or the 529? And... is it absolutely necessary for you to sell the 14060M in order to put that deposit for the 529? If you can keep it, you should keep it. But if you can continue to contribute for a 529 without selling, you should opt to do so.

Sell it to me

Just kidding. I’d sell it as I foresee the market outperforming a Rolex over then next 20 years.

I'd hold it as long as I didn't need the money.
Keep a hold of it until college time and it may be a nice little slice towards that cost by then.

Or, wait until you see how much equipment and accessories you will need when your little one arrives.
My son is two and half and no kidding, going away with him on holiday is like a military operation. He has about the same amount of gear as an army platoon and I'm seriously considering selling our car and buying a Chinook helicopter to get us around.

Despite all of that it's going to be amazing. A huge congratulations to you and your wife. There's nothing better in the world.

If your not enjoying it I would say its the best time to flip it and realise your profits at this market environment.

I would probably buy things for the coming bub or some other family/house things with the money. In life a Rolex is meaningless in the overall scheme of things.

Congrats on your growing family. THAT is what is precious in life.

Welcome back! Congrats on becoming a dad! It’s the best feeling and THE reason I bought my 14060M. Since you already have a Sub Date as a daily, I would leave the NOS Sub in the safe deposit box (as long as you have no debt) and present it to your child when he/she is ready to own/wear a nice watch. As others have said, family is the most important and having the funds to set yourself up for success is always the right play. These watches are just a luxury we get to enjoy for making good decisions in life. Good luck with your decision. I know it will be a tough one!

I do not understand why we believe that our kids will appreciate watches the way we do. And for the «look down at the wrist and remember part»; the kid is going to think about......the safe?

Sell it!

I think I'd go the 529 route. Then once things to stabilize somewhat, I would be looking around for something that you do want to wear that will complement your sub.

Thanks, everyone, for the well-wishes and suggestions. Given that I don’t have a “need” to sell to properly fund the 529, I’ll choose to hold. Just seems like the 14060M will be be harder to acquire in like state if it ever were to sing to me again in the future.

Time Value of Rolex (TVR) > Time Value of Money (TVM).

I would keep it NIB. For the person that said in 20 years the stock market will out perform Rolex is delusional. I don’t disagree. Yes stocks out perform luxury goods in the long run. But the last 20 years stocks returns have been garbage. I have some qqq etf that was bought in 2000 now fast forward to 2019 my average annual return is 4%. With stocks anything can happen. But if I was OP I would hold onto the 14060m keep it NIB and also contribute to the 529 plan. By the way make sure you pick a good broker like Schwab, Fidelity, or Vangaurd. Also make sure you invest aggressively as the child has a long time before the money is needed. Will ensure you don’t need to pony up more money when it comes time for college.

Good to hear! I would wear and enjoy the 14060M and give the 16610 a rest, maybe even a nice servicing at RSC to bring it back to it's original glory.

My thinking is if it stays in stickers now, it will stay that way for the next 15-20 years and beyond. Once you hand it down, wouldn't you want your kid knowing that it was worn by Dad for so many years? Imagine your kid wearing the same watch you wore on vacations/occasions seeing it in photos etc. That is my plan at least....if I could keep one damn watch and stop flipping!

Just food for thought, you could also hand down the 16610 and wear the 14060M yourself

Great idea.

Is anyone know what OP is talking about this sentence? "If I sell, I’m thinking I can put a nice little deposit into a 529."

I didn't get this joke

keep it and give it to your son or daughter someday, that's a nice thought, isn't it?

Life got busy and you almost forgot you had it? Well, it's about to get even more busy, best sell it before you lose all recollection of having it. A 529 is a nice way to pass something meaningful to your child.

if you have no intention to wear it just sell it and invest the money. The value will probably go up but how much? I think an investment will beat that all day. Now if you want to keep it for your kid different story pass something down NIB that would be cool.

If you do choose to sell, I would wait to sell. When we started our 529, we were told you can't start a 529 until you have the SS# of the child, which obviously can't happen until they are born.

The value may increase in that time, so I'd wait to sell.

Also don't see the appreciation of the watch outperforming a 529 over 18 years.

Save it for your kid, I would have died and went to heaven if my dad busted one out when I turned a certain age. And that could be any watch, just would have been great to get it from him as an heirloom

I went hunting for a 14060M last year. It was a surprisingly tricky find! I’d hold it.

Sell it and buy a MSCI World tracker Etf ifmn your sons name. In 20 years he will have enough to buy the watch back and change, in the unlikely event that his watch taste matches yours 20 years earlier.

Welcome back and Moreno importantly, congrats on the little one!

As it relates to a 529, there are tax limits per year that you can contribute (I believe it’s 4k per year now, so just keep that in mind).

If you’re financially stable, I would keep it!!

There are limits as to what you can deduct each year... not contribute
