Follow up questions:

(-) Will this be his only watch? Or will it complement a collection?
(-) What complications does he need? Date? Chronograph?
(-) Bracelet or strap?
(-) New or used?

He isn’t into watches and I think he has a Timex digital watch.

Date yes but Chronograph would be nice too.

Look at offerings from Oris, Baume & Mercier, Hamilton & Tissot possibly Tag Heuer. Good luck on your search.

Much agreed. Oris has some great product currently.

Tudor Black Bay Heritage with red bezel would be close for budget. Deep Blue does an interesting Red Dial diver with Seiko movement for <$400. Oris did a really cool red dial diver as well. Not sure it is still available new? Seiko did one as well but not sure they still make it either. But search those and you may find what you are looking for.

The peer pressure is real. And kind of working. I’m buying two so maybe I’ll get a good discount. One for each of us.

At that price range I am a huge fan of Tag watches. If you’re willing to bump up a bit then I would go Tudor

Don't know how you feel about the secondary market, but Steinhardt used to make a beautiful, red, Ocean 1 diver. Unfortunately, it's not currently in production.

Prefer new for this one since it’s a special gift.

My 1st "nice" watch was an Oris. Still enjoy it. Great watch. Recommended enthusiastically.

Agree with the BB suggestions. That would be a nice one if you could find a preowned within budget!

Definitely well under $2000 for tight budget:

... red bezel, but quartz..
