Insurance company wants appraisals

I wanted to add my watches to my home owners policy, but the insurance company wants appraisals. I only have one from Rolex on my Dad's President, but my other one, the one I just bought, the Submariner, I do not have one. What do I do?

Go to any AD or Jewelry store or used watch store.. they'll do an appraisal for a cost (less than $100).

I'll jump into a Tourneau. Ironically, the original owner purchased it in Tourneau in 2005.

This. It doesn't have to be an AD. Any jewelry store that does appraisals will be able to do it. Bring all the paperwork, warranty card, etc that has all the necessary info if you have it. It'll save some time and you'll likely get it back pretty quick.

This above. I have my watches insured through State Farm. They required either purchase receipt from when obtained by the AD or a detailed appraisal with MSRP and replacement value. My local ADs were able to help. I just paid them fairly for the work.

Same here, I asked that we agree on a 25K policy and they just asked for photographs of the watches and any receipts or paperwork I had.

Insurance company wants appraisals

I’d say you’re possibly shortchanging yourself. Sure the agent of the insurance company may say that, but the claims side will be using what they want to use if you incur a loss.

The appraisal gives you something tangible in case you must challenge the $ amount sent to you for a claim.

The one you got from your dad likely may require an appraisal. For your Sub, you may not need an appraisal. I just insured two new Rolexes. If you provide them with your receipt and that has the retail price, model and serial # you should be all set.

Any reputable jewelry store can give you an appraisal. They will just look up replacement value on Rolex website. $50 should do it.

Make sure you insure it for REPLACEMENT COST!!!!!

They want an appraisal for both. I have the receipt for the Rolex President's service. I will have to go to an AD for an appraisal for the Sub. Do you know how long it takes for an appraisal?

Pretty straight forward stuff. Go get an appraisal for replacement value and send it over.

I just added a jewelry policy to my homeowners. Shouldn’t be that hard.

My insurer said that this year they are now required to require an appraisal on any watch over $5000 regardless of if its new or used or if the receipt is present. It may be a new requirement for 2019. I have an articles policy through State Farm.

Get the appraisal from the store you purchased your new Sub. I asked my AD for appraisal over the phone and he emailed it to me.

I see that you’re in NYC. Look up appraisers.org and you can click on ‘Find an appraiser’. That’s one way to go. These guys usually give you a one pager with description and photograph. And yes, make sure you talk replacement value. Whether your insurance company will accept that varies. My insurance company wanted a valuation (some call centre person) so I asked for their supervisor and they agreed that the invoice/receipt would be fine. Some values say they take two weeks but you can ask them to speed it up.

See you're located in NYC, I highly reccomend Mark Bunda. No BS kinda guy. Google him for his credentials and if you're satisfied with it, make an appointment (located in MetLife building).

Did you buy the sub from an AD? If so, they should be able to provide an appraisal at no cost. If not, most jewelry stores can appraise rolex.

My home owners insurance required appraisals for my watches. My AD performed this for me at no charge.

Purchased from the original owner. I don't think they'll take an appraisal from him. He gave me a generic receipt, but since he wasn't a watch store, they didn't accept it. I didn't think they would.

Davidsw and an AD provided one.

One needed an independent appraisal which was +/- $100

If you just bought it send pic of watch, receipt, and warranty card. That’s what I did and they took it

Saved me from having to pay for appraisal

I used a site called “Valuemystuff”. They are the number one world wide online appraisal service. I used it to value about 10 pieces I was traveling with. From there, I got estimates from Jewelers Mutual and my homeowners insurance (as a personal articles policy). I thought Valuemystuff was realistic in their appraisals and the valuations were similar to what you would find at major auction houses.

I have Safeco and just gave them the retail on a 10K DJ36. As it is on a floater and agreed value...doesn't really need an appraisal.

I live in Dallas, TX and cant find a jeweler to appraise my batgirl

Anyone know of a jeweler that will provide a Rolex appraisal in Dallas? Ive called 6 different locations but they all said they don't appraise Rolex. (this includes the Rolex Service center)

You have to have an appraisal from a certified gemologist. Most ADs do not have gemologists on staff. Cost around 200 a watch from a legit gemologist certified through GIA.
